Rooms: Great size rooms and very clean

I used this hotel recently. The car park is just a few minutes walk away. The rooms are clean but more importantly the bed was comfy which makes all the difference. Being a coeliac I find it difficult to eat in hotels but not this one the choices on the menu were amazing I will certainly use this hotel again.

Terrible hotel, don?t book! Over priced completely gone down, go elsewhere

If you do not have a significant amount of luggage then the walk from the train station is not too bad, but it is uphill. Additionally, if you are following Google maps, you will have some steps to walk up- okay if you have a rucksack or similar item. However, if you have a heavy suitcase then although the distance looks small, it would be more advisable to actually get some transport or assistance.
The location of the host hotel is very good, it can be slightly noisy however, and as the walk is away from the main road, some people can feel slightly unnerved but generally during the week it is not too busy but there are people around as it is a student Town centre. It can be a limited walk to various eateries and entertainment centres. The food at breakfast is generally quite good and the rooms are a good size. Although some people may get the Shining vibe from the carpet in the corridors- they are however reassuringly quite wide. It seems a rarity to have a room with a shower and a bath these days. However, pleasantly surprised that both were in the standard room- although that may not be applicable to all.

Spa only review.
The spa itself is very run down. Floors and showers extremely dirty/mouldy. This was bought for myself as a birthday present in December and was originally booked for June but had to rearrange for September due to childcare issues.
We were never rang to arrange or be given the option of booking in any treatments as the confirmation e-mail stated they would. We did not receive the hot drink on arrival which was part of the package purchased. The afternoon tea was mediocre with the sandwiches having minimal filling and very dry bread. We were also sat on a table next to a plant which a member of staff decided to water with a spray gun at which the water was spraying over the wall and onto us to a point where my partner had to ask them to stop.
The ?gym? as they call it is very old equipment and not a lot of it at all. This visit was a complete let down and considering this was my first spa experience ever It has put me off going to any other.
The ?experience shower? was simply a hot or cold shower around a corner with some LED lights above it. The ?aroma grotto? was just a mouldy smelling steam room and there was no hot tub which I found unusual. No music being played in any area so there is absolutely no atmosphere it is simply a few dingy rooms down some stairs that has clearly had no renovation in a very long time. Simply would not recommend

Great hotel

Probably the best quality hotel in Sheffield. Great breakfast. Decent rooms.

Hotel rooms are feeing a bit dated. The decor, furniture and amenities need refreshing. The hairdryer my wife used sounded terrible on day 1 and packed up on day 2. The air conditioning controller did not seem to do anything, the dial just spun round with no change in temperature. Generally it just made a lot noise and did not really cool the room.
Rooms: Ours was showing its age

Spa, once again, suffering from a chat infestation. 'Innit'.
It's a shame because the majority of users considerate of others but too often, scummers using it who have no regard for protocols.

There are somethings to be aware of which contradict what the hotel said, info provided, in advance of our stay.
I will preface this by saying the staff were all lovely, the room reasonable, and the free drink was a nice touch to bring us to the bar, the decor was alright and the room clean, comfy and had everything we needed, including towels, shampoos, kettle, fridge, usb charging, TV, shower and bath, and twin beds were provided as requested. The minor draw back was the room was a bit dark without a central light.
Staff at reception, spa and bar and kitchen were lovely.
However, some issues that will mean I will probably consider staying at other spa hotels.
The spa facilities are not included in the room price as they used to be, a £10 charge is in place. At no point during booking/info did they tell you this, you couldn't add it on as an extra for example. There is also now a charge for hot drinks in the spa area, and robes and slippers. These have all changed since my last visit. The pool isn't a spa pool, it's really really cold! so takes a while to adapt, used for swimming lessons (which is an odd vibe for a spa), bit dark and tight with the loungers squeezed in such a small space fitted into the pool edge and as there is no jacuzi (my fav) so I will probably book elsewhere for spa trips going forward, especially if the extra charge is the same for all Mercure hotels (visited 4 different ones a couple of times)
Staff please add this £10 charge in the booking process/info.
Breakfast is £12 if you book ahead and not really worth it. There are plenty of nicer food options at the location for less.
Before booking I asked if they could cater for people with celiac disease (my sister). They said 'absolutely they do'. So booked it. While the chefs were knowledgeable about the food, so no fault there, that's not the same as catering for people with allergies. They have gluten free bread, and they will toast it separately -great! However that was the only alternative the rest is more 'can point out things naturally without gluten' like tomatos, eggs, but not gluten free alternatives, (so no alternative sausage, hash brown, cereal, pastries, beans). It's buffet format and cross use of utensils, and there are also shared pots and sauces which means there is a lot of cross contamination. So my sister didn't really have much apart from bacon toast and melon, as traces of gluten can cause depilating pain.
It's hard to cater for allergies properly, and would have understood if they couldn't and saved ourselves some money, so please ensure staff doing prior communications are informed and say no when someone asks if you can cater for allergens or be clearer in your restrictions.
For someone who could eat everything, it's still on the pricey side for what's available , the quality lacking.
I think they are trying to cut costs and it's effecting the experience.
I'm not saying I wouldn't stay again, just would consider the added costs Vs facilities, and look at other options in balance.
Food and drinks: Not celiac or allergen safe. New charge for spa drinks.
Noteworthy details: £10 spar charge, no hot tub/jacuzzi. But steam, saurna, cold room, aroma room, and cold length swimming pool. Great location, lovely lounge, will hold luggage for you, friendly staff.

A modern city centre hotel, excellent in the centre of the city, parking was okay, the 50% off (£10) a day deal with the Arundelgate car park is good. Rooms are as you would expect, the lobby and restaurant area are lovely with the winter gardens only seperated by a glass wall. As is common with this kind of hotel the orange juice at breakfast is a watery vauguely yellow liquid resembling some cheap supermarket brand orange drink (not enough content to be called juice even!) rest of the breakfast items are good although a freshly cooked option would be nice (pancakes or omelettes).
The hotel website and pictures make much of the swimming pool and spa, and yes next to the spa services it does say "additional charge" if you look carefully, I would fully expect to have to pay extra for treatments, you have to pay £10 per person per day to access the swimming pool. I would not expect to pay to access a swimming pool at a hotel, where the pool forms so much of the advertising for the hotel, no option to include the spa in the room price

I don't even know where to start with this review as my experience couldn't get any worse! I'm a member at the hotel gym, paying £70 a month.. I was thinking the hotel experience would be as good as the gym
Firstly the remote in room 106 didn't work, I had been down to the desk multiple times over this. I got new batterys and even asked for a different remote to try. After 5-6 times having to go down to the desk I was starting to loose hope. I was told maintenance would come up to my room.. I waited two hours putting my night on hold for no one to come? In the end the night manager came to my room and had the still problem as me. After around 5min of pressing every button the menu screen was took off.. basically the remote was broken and after he left I still couldn't use anything even when pressing every button. I had this issue for three days!
The heating in the room wasn't working, after the headache I had over the TV, I wasn't even bothering in the end. The same manager who told me he would upgrade my room if the TV couldn't be fixed, he told me what I wanted to hear for a easy night. I got chatting to a girl at the bar, she was asking about my room.. I explained what had happened and she laughed telling me the same manager had upgraded her room for free and given her free breakfast all because she asked if the was a good view from the room?
A different manager came out into the back smoking part and had the cheek to accuse me of being homeless! she asked for my name and room number being very rude and didn't even apologize for being so disrespectful!! The was homeless people sat on a table, not harming anyone just getting out of the rain for abit.. she was so rude to them, speaking to them like they arnt human.. actually disgusting to witness
The homeless was harmless, wasn't making a mess or being loud just trying to stay dry and warm! I was sat with these for a few hours, even got them pints or give them ciggies so they didn't have to smoke something off the floor and even got them some food as I over heard them talking about being hungry. They was so thankful for everything I had given them and just had nothing but stick from the hotel and police coming out twice. The police was trying to pick on them for doing nothing wrong and would of put them in the rain on a wet cold floor if I hadn't spent hours getting to know them, looking out for them. I'm not a person who looks down on others due to them being in a bad situation, I couldn't sleep last night with anxiety for them getting so much stick when they wasn't harming anyone and it was only me out of the hotel and the girl out there all night! I kept going down to check they was okay, having a ciggies around 1am they was asleep not causing any problems or in anyone's way! They just wanted to sleep somewhere dry, you've got none English people getting put in paid hotels on the tax payers?
The same manager who upgraded the girls rooms checked me out this morning, I told him I wanted to make a complaint about the female managers actions.. he wouldn't take it as he's due to leave that hotel to work someone else today or tomorrow so he didn't care
I believe I'm owed some kind of compensation for the poor stay I had!! I don't want money and my requirements are the three lads who was sleeping outside.. I want them put in a room for at least a night so they can get a wash and stay somewhere safe for the night
I also believe the restaurant throws food in the bin and why not set times and days were the homeless can go to a side door and get some food rather then it being put in the bin? I got the lads double cheeseburger meals and words can't even explain how bad for them I felt when they was thanking me so much.. I kept telling them it's okay they didn't have to keep thanking me as I done for them what any other Scouse

We could hear constant industrial noise in our room and also the pool (which was the reason we chose the hotel) is now charged 10 pounds a person. Obviously they don?t mention it anywhere until you get to the spa reception
