“This hotel was smaller than I expected but the welcome was warm and the atmosphere was buzzing. The bar and waiting staff were helpful and so much fun. The food by chef Kenny was just amazing, steak to die for topped with succulent king prawns in lashings of Garlic butter, and all the trimmings, every plate that came out of the kitchen received a wow from the diners, the presentation was beautiful. Don't pass this little gem of a place, I cant wait to go back.”

“There was no available accommodation in Newcastleton on the night we wanted, so we booked at the Eskdale in Langholm instead. I had previously stayed at the Eskdale in November 1968 when walking from Alnmouth to Gretna. I was not disappointed then, and neither were we disappointed in 2023. The room was quite large enough, the bed was comfortable, meals (dinner and breakfast) were excellent. Good old-fashioned Scottish hospitality!”

“Great place to stay. Two brothers run this hotel and are most welcoming and friendly. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. The evening meal we had on arrival was delicious and the breakfast was wonderful. The staff are very nice and the service is great. The hotel is bigger than it looks from the outside with rooms up and down small stairs and an interesting interior. Lovely village setting and great history in the area. Walking round the village after our meal, the locals were friendly and approachable when asking for directions to the local castle ruins and even passing people in the street said hood evening to us. Would definitely stay there again.Rooms: The rooms are airy and comfortable and clean. Our rooms were at the top of the house and there were some low ceilings to negotiate but didn't let that worry us. Great amenities and snack breakfast available in the room if required.Nearby activities: There's a few shops including a minimarket and gift shops and a chemist to name a few. There's a library across the road linked to Thomas Telford and public toilets. Parking nearby with a disc from the hotel. River with short walking distance.Walkability: Nice village to walk round, two bridges over the river. Walk along river and then to castle ruins into a small wooded area and back onto the bridge to main street.Food & drinks: The meals and breakfast offered by The Douglas Hotel are outstanding. The menu's are very good but can't prepare you for the presentation and deliciousness of the meals . We expected good food but this was way above.”

“Have stayed at The Crown Hotel a number of times. The staff are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Bedrooms are always clean and tidy, beds very comfortable, ensuite great, always plenty of hot water for a shower. Plenty of tea and coffee in room. Public areas clean and tidy. Samantha and Steve who own The Crown are so friendly and show a true interest in the history of the building. Lots of information of The Common Riding ... If you visit ask about what is a celebration of the town's history. What can be said about the food, great selection available and prepared and served to a high standard, the good quality of ingredients makes this a dining experience much higher than the normal run of the mill meals served at many eatery's. Full cooked breakfast is also well prepared and will fill the most hungry of mouths. (Ask Sam about the haggis. I'm a townie and found it very interesting ???) The bar has a very good selection of beers and spirits and always made to feel welcome by the bar staff and customers. During our stays we have seen the upgrading that the owner have done and are going to continue to do. Thank you to Sam and Steve and all the staff that make a stay here enjoyable and we are looking forward to visiting in the future.”

“Beautiful location in a rural countryside village. Food was fantastic. Service was great. Perfect setting for a wedding. Great facilities. Some disparity in the room facilities but nothing which spoiled the experience. Breakfast was outstanding. Free parking and EV charging points.”
