I really want to like this place. The food was great when it eventually arrived. We got in quite late an a Sunday afternoon, about 2 pm and they were not busy. Sadly, however, we had to wait and wait and wait with no explanation until very late, that the cook was busy making more gravy. The kids meals came out before the main carvery was available and that was ok. Still, as can be seen in the photo,?of the plate was salad.....what 6yr old likes that? When the food was eventually ready, the attitude of the server was rather negative. I had to ask a few times, just for ketchup as it was forgotten by 2 waitresses.By the time we were finished, we decided to skip desert even though it was a part of the kids meal...just because we had already been waiting too long. So overall, while the food was great, the overall experience felt strained and negative and I think it will be a while before we try this place again.

The food was amazing; the chap serving the food was spot on. The girls running the tables were not so attentive. We were shown to our table and not once informed that we could order the carvery, so we waited a while before being told by another table. Then we had to wait a long time to pay before heading to the bar and paying. We would definitely visit again.

It is really very rare that I give 5 stars across the board but this place deserves them. We only visited the restaurant but I did peek through the window of the bar and it did look really cosy and busy.
If your in the local area on holiday or just living there then I'd strongly suggest you put this restaurant into your itinerary, all the staff were very friendly and the place itself is very clean and tidy but keeping the history of the building in place. One of our party had some dietary requirements and this was no problem for the chef there food was catered for with the assurance of maximum effort to prevent cross contamination. The food was nothing less than delicious with great portion sizes and value for money.
If I recommend nothing else on the menu then take this bit of advice.
Try the icecream (I had the sticky toffee pudding with it) it really is sublime.
We live just north of London and I can guarantee I'll be coming back to Scotland and this will most definitely be in the plans

I went here for dinner and had the soup of the day, personally I thought it lacked salt, but a twist from the salt mill on the table and it was delicious. It was served with a piece of foccacia bread and butter. I also had the onion rings which were huge! The staff were friendly but I felt they lacked service skills, once they had served the meal there was no further interaction. They have a variety of menus but oddly they don't offer their takeaway menu as part of their main menu.
