Clean and tidy rooms. Friendly and pleasant hosts. Lovely food, nicely cooked English breakfast & had a top notch Beef Madras in the evening. Excellent service and reasonably priced. Ideally located for the both the Yorkshire coast & North Yorkshire moors. During our stay we visited Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby & Roseberry Topping. If you are a dog owner, dogs are welcome at this establishment. All in all a most pleasant stay, highly recommended.

Underwhelming..beer was ok ...never had re-heated chips before, batter thick hiding the fish... girlfriends looked like Aladdin,s slipper..you,d think in a seaside port the fish and chips would on par....must learn to read trip advisor in the future.

Such a shame. This could be a lovely pub except for the staff. What a horrible experience. The guy managed to just about drag himself off his chair to serve me. He looked quite put out that he had to get up. Came over no hello or anything just stared at me. I ordered the drinks. I had a mocha. He used the machine and handed me a half a cup full. I said is that it? Surely it meant to be full? He looked at me like I was mad. So he put it under again and filled it up. £8.60 for pint of theakstons & a mocha. He slouched off somewhere never to be seen again, maybe to get rid of the dead lice! Anyway I put my sugar in had a sip and it was disgusting, persi think the milk was on the turn. Went back to the bar obviously he was no where to be seen. There was a woman sitting there on her phone/tablet whom I guessed worked there. So I called excuse me about 3 times, she was that engrossed in her device, with her legs up on the bench. A regular had to get her attention for me! I told her the drink was awful and I couldn't drink it. Her reply was that it was the machine that made it and what does she expect her to do. Told her it tasted off she said it's filled up fresh every day, very unlikely with these 2 members of lazy staff. I stood there and said I can not drink it. She basically threw my money back at me. All we can say is they are rude, incompetent staff and whoever owns that pub needs to retrain them in everything or get rid. Most unpleasant experience in Whitby. Will never recommend this pub due to the staff. Such a shame.

Not the friendliest of pubs
Nice old fashioned pub.
No traditional ales on.
It was after the busy weekend, though
It's worth a visit

This is the second time we have visited here this week, the first time was a little disappointing as they had very little choice of drinks available, we were told this was because the delivery driver had let them down. It did seem to lack atmosphere and hardly had any customers in there. We ordered our drinks, which was the most expensive round yet in comparison with the other pubs around Whitby.
We noticed that a couple of staff members were sat at a table especially reserved for themselves, right in front of the bar, drinking, playing darts and having their own conversation, not that we minded so much but the male staff member literally just ignored my partner who was waiting to be served at the bar and just carried on playing darts, he eventually served us but we felt like we had inconvenienced him. Surprisingly they then started closing things down at around 8pm blaming the fact they couldn?t offer a choice of drinks, but said they should get a delivery the next day. Looking back at previous reviews I can see this has been a common occurrence for the last couple of years rather than days!
Also the whole pub did look really quite tired, we could see quite a few flies buzzing around and landing on the tables, which obviously doesn?t fill you with much confidence on its cleanliness, seeing they were after the left over food and drinks which were visible on the tables. The tables were so sticky, it looked like they hadn?t been cleaned in a long time, the ladies toilets were dirty, basically everything just needed a good clean!
We still felt that the pub deserved another visit though, as we do love the character and location of this place and had been in many times before over the years, so we just hoped it was likely an off day for them.
However the second visit was pretty much the same (in fairness worse) the same male staff member (possibly manager didn?t care if you were there or not, no choice of drinks on again, exactly the same as before (surely this can?t still be down to delivery just not turning up? Again dirty tables, dirty toilets and worse of all, we just felt like we weren?t welcome. We left after our drinks, realising we were the only couple left in there. We thanked them and headed for the door, it was 9pm, we were followed to the door which was briskly shut behind us and was then bolted up for the night!
I?m not really sure what is going on here, I can only assume that this beautiful little pub with all its history, is being allowed to run itself into the ground because you can clearly see minimum effort is being put in to running it, such a shame because given it?s location, with the right people running it, it really could be a little gold mine!
As the staff are quite rude, the male one in particular, they clearly don?t want you there and can?t wait for you to leave, so unfortunately we won?t be going in again until it?s under new management!
Actually wish I?d have read previous reviews before going in.

Beautiful place.
Make sure you have your strong legs on ? its steep but worth it. The photo I have added is a bus that got stuck on the tiny bend in the road years ago. Wouldn't want to drive a bus down those roads now xx
