I booked my car in for an MOT with a £20 off voucher and a £5 Motoring Club discount, thinking I was getting a great deal! Just £15.50 for the MOT. I went in on my own, with a baby in tow, feeling confident I was in safe hands.
About 1.5 hours after dropping off my car, I got a call from George. He told me the MOT had failed due to a broken front coil spring, and that the recommended fix was to replace both front springs, plus do the tracking. He quoted me £271 for the springs and £55 for the tracking. I did a quick mental calculation, (£326) expensive, but fair enough, these things happen. George said on the phone, ?You shouldn?t drive it away like that. Are you going to leave the car with me?? I told him I?d call my husband and ring back. My husband phoned another garage to compare, and they quoted around £110?£120 per spring. Since Halfords already had the car and the saving wasn?t huge, I decided to go ahead.
On Wednesday, I still hadn?t heard anything (although I was told it would be done by Tuesday), we were really struggling with school pickups at this point, so I called George. He seemed annoyed to be fair and said, ?I?ll give you a bell when it?s retested.? A couple of hours later, he finally called and said the car was ready. He even joked, ?Do you want to know how much? £1 million!? Then came the shock: £613.73.
I was stunned!!! I told him, ?That?s not what you said.? He replied, ?It?s £271 for EACH spring.? I was never told that. He tried to relate by saying, ?I know, I?ve been there myself.?
I was upset and shaken. My husband came home from work and we went back in together. We asked for a breakdown of the costs and said it was very disappointing not to be told the true price upfront. George said, ?I didn?t speak to you, I spoke to her,? and claimed I must have misunderstood. I?m certain I didn?t. I would never have agreed to this job if I knew it would cost over £600.
He handed the keys to my husband and barely acknowledged me, even though I was the customer. I felt ignored, disrespected, and taken advantage of.
We paid (reluctantly) and made a formal complaint to Halfords Customer Services. We were told we?d hear back in 3?5 working days. That time has long passed and we?ve heard nothing.
We then called another Halfords Autocentre, and they quoted £521 for the same job, so this is clearly their standard pricing model, not just one mistake. We also spoke to two independent garages locally, and the most expensive quote we received was £280 total!!!
I don?t know how Halfords can justify such a huge markup. It?s not just overpriced, it?s exploitative, especially when it targets people who trust them and don?t feel able to challenge technical details on the spot.
We?ll be reporting this to Citizens Advice and Trading Standards and we?ll also be contacting BBC Watchdog. People deserve to know how Halfords operates.
I thought I was going in for a £15 MOT. I left feeling ripped off, ignored, and deeply let down. I made a mistake walking in, one I?ll never make again. I wouldn?t recommend Halfords Autocentre to anyone.

Terrible service. Booked wheel alignment only to be told on arrival that machine broke down the other day and they can?t do it. Things happen i understand but a call would have been nice to say please re book. Guy was rude and not even apologetic. Booked there without reading the reviews, but now i see I'm not the only one that got terrible service. Stay away from this place.

Had a major service on my Skoda Rapid with these guys and just after 3 weeks i have warnings including critical low coolant levels, issue with my gear lever button. The service was MAJOR and liquids were suppose to be mandatory checks which i paid them for. These guys have failed to do their job. Very Disappointed. Not recommended.

I dropped my car off this morning for an appointment that my partner had booked online for 11:30am. Whilst there I asked the gentleman behind the desk how long roughly he thought the appointment would take and was told that as the car needed two separate things looking at each part would take about 45 minutes.
By 14:15pm neither myself or my partner had heard anything from the centre and we had both tried to call on several occasions for an update but there was no answer. I ended up going back to the centre only to find my car hadn?t moved from the spot I parked it in and when I went into reception I was told that it was in a queue waiting with everyone else. The man I spoke to was very abrupt and rude and it was very apparent he didn?t care what I had to say. I ended up getting a refund and will go elsewhere from now on. What I do not understand is why there is a booking system online if it is not going to be followed. I appreciate that it might be a busier day but it would have been nice to receive a call to let me know it was going to be a lot longer than expected. It would also be nice if the phone system was monitored as we called multiple times with no response whatsoever. I also think maybe some basic customer service training would be useful so rude members of staff know how to talk to their customers properly!

Awful service- booked a collection for an MOT on 2 separate dates- the first was cancelled via text on the morning of collection, so giving them the benefit of the doubt tried a second time and they just did not turn up (no call, nothing)! I tried over half a dozen times to call them to see what was going on but the phone was never picked up- just rang out! Such time wasters- places like this should not be in business.

Absolutely horrible experience dealing with the center turned up for pre-booked MOT and service and was told will not get done as they only have one member of staff to do 9 MOTs and services

Very bad service. Been to Halfords Welwyn Garden City for tyre change. Immediately after tyre change started getting error "Tyre pressure sensor not detected". Spoken with Halfords about it, they asked me to bring car to their garage Saturday morning. When I went their (from Hatfield to WGC) Saturday morning they said they can't check my car today due to shortage of staff and asked me to rebook check again. Firstly its Halfords who didnt did job correctly or done something wrong with tyre sensors + harrassing customer asking rebooking again and again.

Horrible customer service!!Rude front desk staff !!
Never using Halfords again for any service!!!
I?ve dropped my car at 10:00 (after I?ve reserved a time slot)to replace all my tyres on the car and been told I have only one car in front and then mine is next . I?ve Come back at 13:15(more than 3 hours later)because they wouldn?t answer the phone and they didn?t even started the work on may car.
After told them way is taking this long , been told by the same person that I had 4 cars in front and I didn?t have a booking , all this being very angry and rude.
I?ve cancelled everything and went to a local garage
In fact you can?t do anything on they?re website without booking a time slot and it says clearly in the email confirmation that the jobs takes between 1-2 hours

Twice I have booked a ?guaranteed fitting slot? for a simple battery change and twice I have been told that I need to leave the car for several hours.
Halfords shouldn?t offer ?guaranteed fitting slots? when they cannot actually uphold them!

I had tyres changed last week in preparation for my MOT. Today, my car failed its MOT because the member of WGC Halfords staff (who I believe was a more senior member of staff) fitted the tyre inside out. The word ?INSIDE? is very clearly written on the outside. I didn?t think to check the work as I assumed it had been fitted correctly but the garage caught it and fixed it.
I now have a fail on my MOT record and it cost to have fixed at the garage, in order to pass the retest.
It?s a shame because the team were friendly and I had an otherwise good experience. I also visited today to tell them what had happened and they were polite and handled it well. But this is such a significant error I obviously won?t be using them again.
