“We came for the tasting menu while on honeymoon and what a lovely way to celebrate!

The menu was great - a wonderful range of savoury and sweet dishes, cooked to such a high standard.

1863 were wonderful hosts, and the service was impeccable.

I may have eaten some bloody delicious food, but I also may have enjoyed the finest espresso martini I've ever had. What a delight.”

Food delicious and good potions especially for the kids menu which when you have pre-teens, isn't usually enough but adult meals are too much!”

“Had a really excellent Sunday lunch here - significantly better than pretty much any other pub Sunday lunch I can remember having. Big old portions of everything, excellent beef, vegetables cooked exactly right (or to our taste anyway). The Yorkshire puddings were beautiful, very clearly properly done, and big. Just everything you could ask. Lovely staff. It's in a beautiful village. But it's the food that was really noteworthy - nothing fancy, but done very, very well.”

“Enjoyed a beautiful meal at the black swan last night. One of the best meals we’ve ever had. Food was beautifully prepared and presented. Generous portions. Staff very attentive. Would definitely recommend a visit”

“My husband and I had a great time at Aqua Sana. I booked the 3 hrs session as a treat for my 60th birthday, and although we have been before and enjoyed the experience, this was the best time! Katy invited us to join two complementary sessions , one was a deep relaxation session and the other was a DIY mini facial session. She told us about some products and allowed us to try them. We hope to be able to come back again.”

“Amazing hotel with first class service by lovely happy staff. Our room had wonderful views of the lake and was furnished appropriately for the era of the hotel. The bed was very comfortable, we slept well and weren’t disturbed at all by the storm outside. The vegetarian/vegan breakfast was delicious served in the lovely dining room. Thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful and restful stay and hope to return soon. Thanks to everyone who made it so great.”

“Good basic accommodation for a brief overnight stop on route to Scotland. Booked late, but £125 is overpriced for this. Convenient for the M6 and A66 at Penrith. Useful to be next to a Greggs for breakfast, although after 9 am nearby Rheged could be a better choice if time allowed.”

“Room as expected re. Bedding and pillows. Air con made more noise than actual air conditioning power though…

“Great place for a young family, everything conveniently located (sometimes a bit of a long walk from the outer most cabins) loads of stuff for the kids to do and nice clean facilities. My only dislike was the beds, if you like a firm mattress then your in luck because I have slept on softer floors, nothing like waking up feeling like you have gone 10 rounds in the ring.”

“Just back from a fantastic night at the hotel. Stayed the evening before the McMillan Mighty Hike. 6 of us in total. Every room was spotlessly clean with the staff very welcoming and friendly. The spa was lovely. Didn’t have any treatments but the pool, steam room, jacuzzi and sauna were fabulous. Steam room was the hottest steam room I’ve ever been in which was fantastic. Evening meal in the restaurant was beautiful. We especially recommend the BBQ platter with the brisket and salmon. Absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately we didn’t experience the breakfast as our walk start time was too early, but based on the food we ate in the restaurant, I’m sure it would be delicious. Overall, a fantastic night at the hotel, enjoyed by everyone. Looking forward to returning”
