Shockingly bad Tesco, service was awful, staff were useless and the queues are ridiculous
May 2024 by Ryan Dunne
Overall, this Tesco is a far cry from how the shop used to be years ago. After a refurbishment that was done last year, the store as a whole changed for the worst. The aesthetics as a whole barely changed but all of the previous staff apart from a couple of exceptions were changed out and haven't been seen again.
Isles being cluttered with trolleys and staff restacking shelves almost in a panicked fashion at peak times such like rush hour. There has never been a time where I haven't walked into the store and have seen at least half a dozen trolleys out in the isles creating chokepoints or being brought out half empty. Having to bend like a contortionist to get around them and retrieve products. Creating long queues at the checkout because of a single person running one till and the self service checkout having no carrier bags so if you have a full basket worth of shopping, you must go the manned checkout. With the customers paying for petrol, there has been a few times where the queues for checkout going to the back of the store and on the rare occasion wrapping around isles. You end up spending more time waiting at checkout then being in the shop, even a simple errand to get milk can take upwards of 15 minutes because of long queues at checkout.
The staff also seem more worried about incentives rather than the community itself, sure there are some good staff working there but most treat this Tesco Express like the big supermarkets they're probably used to. Sometimes all wearing headsets and talking over speakerphones to have conversations to delivery drivers outside or a friend who is physically 10 metres away from them. Even at 11pm they use these speakers like they are in the middle or nowhere not expecting any complaints. Most of the staff from their badges haven't been employed for more than a year and the shop is still in this state. Even at checkout the staff just seem fed up and just want you out of their hair, you get a far better customer experience going to the BP further down the road than at this Tesco Express. As they at the very at least ask how is your day and not give you the death stare asking for a carrier bag.
The range of products has also gone downhill, with the selection either changing on a monthly basis or the items never being available due to the aforementioned trolley problem. Even bacon is hard to find at this shop, though this might sound racist it's most likely due to the staff all hailing from middle eastern descent where pork is seen as a "dirty meat" and shouldn't be handled. Most times when I have to go to the shop to get the odd ingredient or ice cream during the summer, I can never find what i'm looking for and have to go to other stores to find the correct items which is a clear problem and needs to be addressed.
In conclusion, this Tesco Express would be a lot better if the staff treated the shop not as a large supermarket rather a local shop for the community. Keeping the isles stacked at the appropriate times where it isn't going to cause problems; And finally, stop making trips which can take 5 minutes over half an hour just to get something as simple as milk because of personal beliefs or being fussed about making more money. Until the quality of the shop improves I cannot in good graces recommend people go to this shop even for petrol, you get a far better experience going down to the BP with the attached Spar. Yes it hasn't got the wide range than Tesco has, but at least they know how to run a shop.

Bins on forecourt overflowing I asked the Team Leader a week ago still not done. No gloves for when fueling said they are on order. It's been 2 months. Poor layout of store makes queuing difficult.

Friendly staff & competitive prices in the East Ardsley area.

When the store expanded to a tesco express I wasn't in favour at all. I felt it would spoil the 'village' feel of East Ardsley.Way before and during lockdown however in my mind the Tesco Express has become in a way almost the hub of the community. Not because we all meet in there to share a 4 pack of tenants extra ( we don't btw ) but because the staff are so friendly helpful and well just lovely. They look after and out for people with learning disabilities , people who have mobility problems , etc and are very personable. In this age of quantified goal driven jobs I think the staff from this store should win an award for looking after the community they are a part of and making them feel like people , not just customers. And they do 3 for fiver bottles of beer :-)
