My wife and I have now stayed here twice and have found the staff welcoming and the rooms well equipped, very comfortable and clean. The buffet breakfast is exceptional! On this visit we used the restaurant for dinner and the dishes were very tasty and well presented. On checkout, staff member Jess was a delight to talk to. Will visit again!

We went for the roast dinner. Great efficient staff. Really professional and good safe procedures in place. (The staff carry the hit food). The food was delicious. All fresh and well presented.

Stayed here quite a few times now. Always was a pleasure. Rooms were comfortable, bathrooms clean and tidy, towels white and full.....and this still applies in the main fortunately...for now! However breakfast display is diminished to a standard run of the mill buffet. Previously it was fulsome and appetizing but admittedly still offers a reasonable English breakfast /cereal/small fruit choice/juices/self-service coffee and tea plus a few pastries, very Travel Lodge. Biggest negative now is the removal of carvery. Menu now mediocre, and on a pub grub level. Non-resident business has dwindled as a result, and a highlight we looked forward to vanished. The separate house rooms have been sold off, plans are afoot to totally revamp to fewer but more luxurious (= more expensive!) rooms. Standards of housekeeping have dropped. In room refreshments are not replaced daily, grubby net curtains at window, glass marks not cleaned, dusty light fittings, bulbs not replaced, reluctant toilet flush, shower was just a dribble from hand held head bed looks thrown over, not 'made' Feels that establishment was being "run down" to put off current demographic of client because a higher spending and therefore higher expectation client is the hotels future aim upon redevelopment...

We have spent the last few days at The Old Tollgate Hotel near Steyning in West Sussex. The room was exceptional, roomy, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Our evening meal was delicious and each morning we enjoyed a tasty breakfast with a choice of continental and hot food. Our visit to see family was made even more special when our small grandchildren were welcomed to look around and play some games in the hotel lounge. The staff at Old Tollgate are welcoming and helpful. We?d like to give a special mention to Rita who is everything you would wish in a hotel Reception. Thank you so much for helping us make some memories and we will of course return.

This was my third visit and was so disappointed to find the evening carvery had gone, replaced by a very limited al a carte menu. It was obvious that a number of cost saving measures had been introduced, such as only white bread for toast, biscuits and water in the room only for the first night and cleaning of rooms very inferior. However I would say that the reception staff were very helpful as to were some of the waitresses. I will be interested to see what happens to the Tollgate as I would like to stay there again next year, but have some reservations. Please don't let this hotel go further downhill.

The location for us was just perfect and the staff: well they were the best. Reception was consistently on the ball and Elaine in the dinning room went the extra mile on the three occasions we ate at the hotel. The Toll Gate was busy on all of the four days we were there and the place had a lovely atmosphere which we all enjoyed. The breakfasts were good and every member of staff took the time to ensure we were comfortable and felt welcome. Faultless.

My parents stayed for nearly 4 weeks at the Tollgate Sept / Oct 23 whilst having major house renovations. Every member of staff was wonderful so warm and friendly and helpful . Rita on reception was especially caring and helped with their every need. The room was incredibly spacious , had everything they needed and was well cleaned . The breakfast was exceptional with a vast choice . They had the most amazing time at the Tollgate and would recommend to anyone .

I'm sorry to say that, after reading some of the other reviews here, that my opinion is very much the same. The welcome and room we're very good, but having booked and pre-paid the evening meal, we were very disappointed. The carvery was always worth coming for, but the new 'a la carte' menu is probably the worse move that the hotel could have made. The starters were average at best, with the ham hock being more like cat food and the bread/cracker? that was served with it was very hard and inedible. My wife and I both had the steak (I've never seen a 10 oz sirloin so thin) and while my rare steak was edible, my wife's well done steak would have been better on the bottom of somebodies boot. When I mentioned to the server that she couldn't eat it all we got was a "oh, I'm sorry about that", then he walked off. The puddings weren't too much better. All in all the food was a lot less quality than we were used to having at the old tollgate and a lot more overpriced for what it was. Whilst on the subject of overpriced, £9.75 for a glass of average rioja, which you could buy a whole bottle for in Tesco. We also couldn't believe that all the diners were crammed into the small front dining room, while the larger, more spacious room was left empty. It made what was supposed to be a pleasant anniversary meal very awkward, as we were very close to the other tables. Again, not what we were expecting. This was our second stay here and probably our 10th time of dining here, but I can say categorically that we will not be back. Nearly £200 for one night's stay and a meal of that quality is very poor, also £38 for 3 pints and 2 glasses of wine is not good value either.

The members of staff were very friendly and the service associated with the reception and restaurant was exceptional. The room was well decorated and the beds very comfortable. The servicing of the room was a little disappointing as the replenishing of the room tray was not very generous. The food, particularly the carvery and breakfast, had numerous choices and was particularly good value for money and extremely tasty. A minor disappointment was that the evCharger that we used on a previous visit was no longer available. In this day this is surprising as chargers are not available in the locality.

This used to be my favourite place of all for our special occasions, as it was so amazing. Now the open starter buffet has gone, along with the help your self deserts. Nothing really special on the menu. No children's menu either. This maybe explains why there was no more than 15 people dining, and we were 10 of them. Half the restaurant in darkness so save more money. Real sinking ship feeling. Food was ok but expensive, it was a dining experience before, now just food like any other a la carte restaurant. Maybe their stream lining works for their staying guests, but they have taken away a restaurant that was enjoyed by locals for years. End of an area so thanks for nothing!
