Wonderfully characterful hotel reeking with oak-beamed Tudor history, warm cosy spaces, and a good modern spa, with pool and jacuzzi, and great head massage. Comfortably spacious room, albeit crazily overheated at 23.5C on arrival. Sadly, this premium-priced offering wasn't matched by the food. We stayed overnight for dinner and breakfast. Firstly, the dinner menu is desperately unexciting. Leek and potato soup was returned, flavourless and very salty. Ham and chicken terrine wasn't bad. Replacement smoked salmon was ok. One main of sea bass in an oriental broth was tasty, but the other of venison was coated gloopily in an overthick overwhelming wine gravy. We both had a raging thirst overnight. More minor point, but food service was patchy. The waiter was very natural and welcoming, the waitress unsmilingly brisk and perfunctory. The experience was reinforced by a breakfast with dry bacon and firmly rubbery mushroom. Very disappointing.

Question: What?s a bigger sin than bland food??Answer: paying £86 for it !!Two mains, one side, two glasses of wine. £86 of your hard earn pounds please sir!Maybe the service and friendly staff were able to redeem. WrongNeedless to say this vibe vacuum of a restaurant will not be on my return to list.If you?re prices aren?t going to come down then improve the quality, improve the staff attitude, improve the customer experience and improve the dated and wonky table filled restaurant. This review doesn?t deserve photos.

My wife booked this hotel for a short weekend break. What a great hotel, the staff were superb, the Spa equal to that. Great location with some reputed good walks. Catered for my coeliac and gluten free food requirements. So what a find and I?d recommend this hotel.Food & drinks: Just great food?and service

Our second visit, and there will be a third, steeped in history and charm, being a short walk from Midhurst town and nature walks it is ideally located. The hotel itself has great spa facilities and well equipped gym, the onsite pub is cosy and warm and restaurant food is amazing. We were kindly upgraded due to the visit being a celebration and the staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful. I cannot recommend highly enough and looking forward to returning.

We had a brilliant stay at The Spread Eagle this weekend. Staff were all charming and helpful, the room was gorgeous, clean, quiet and spacious, and the food was to die for. The pool, sauna and jacuzzi were lovely, clean, not over crowded and had drinks service direct to loungers. The authentic original Tudor and Stuart (?) features are stunning, especially the dining room and lounge bar. And to be honest the room with pool access, dinner and breakfast for two was excellent value too. Proper impressed and keen to visit again.Oh and do bring boots and go for a local walk, reception have a series of free printed maps with walk options nearby kindly.

We had a lovely stay, booked last minute. We had dinner and breakfast and the food and service were very good. They had a good gluten free selection and allergen information available. We also enjoyed an evening sat in the lounge by the fire which was very comfortable and atmospheric. We enjoyed using the spa facilities (my only critique would be that there aren't quite enough chairs if there are 10+ people using the facilities). The staff were very accommodating and we were very comfortable and happy during our stay. We will book again and look forward to out next visit.

The spread eagle hotel and spaPositives- the hotel decor was very cosy and beautiful- rooms were spacious and had very large comfy beds- pool facilities were great and spacious- hotel staff very helpful and friendly- bar area is very cosy- location is a very pretty and quiet location- food, wine and service was greatNegatives- the room carpet was heavily stained with tea due to there not being a proper table for tea making facilities- there were a large number of children at this hotel. Although we don?t have problems with this normally, it did ruin our dinner experience when one child was crying throughout. We could see other guest becoming agitated. Nearly all other guests were couples on a getaway (including us). This hotel isn?t very suitable for children as it?s very adult natured with fine dining and spa facilities. It?s far from your average family hotel especially as people are paying a lot of money for a countryside posh hotel.- although the pool and facilities were great, we struggled to enjoy the pool/sauna/hot tub due to the amount of children diving and screaming in it. Although the hotel does have designated times for children to use the pool, it was difficult for us to use the adult timings as they would?ve clashed with our plans.Personally, this hotel would be better off as an adults only hotel. We couldn?t use the spa facilities due to it being fully booked so we can comment on that.
