I visited for some food shopping and some non-food items. It was easy to find what I was looking for. The young assistant at the self-service checkouts was friendly, pleasant, and helpful.

Variety in product and convenience with self-service

I had a very frustrating experience at this supermarket today while shopping with my aunt, who was visiting from abroad. She wanted to pay with a £50 note and, before scanning any items, we showed the note to the cashier and asked if it would be accepted. She confirmed that it was fine.
After scanning everything (totaling £111), the cashier suddenly wasn?t sure and had to call her manager?who then said the note couldn?t be accepted because it was an old version. By this point, the cashier had already put the transaction through as a cash payment (we handed over £150), and we?d received £39 in change.
We had no other cash with us and were told to go and find another ATM. I ran to the Sainsbury?s cash machine, only to find it had no cash available. When I returned and explained this, the staff began blaming us for using an old note?even though we?d checked in advance. I offered to pay by card instead, but was told that wasn?t possible because the transaction had already been processed as cash.
They then asked me to drive elsewhere to try a different ATM?which I refused, understandably, since the error wasn?t ours and there was no guarantee the next cashpoint would work either.
After another 10 minutes of waiting, they finally agreed to refund and re-scan everything. Strangely, the total came to £113 this time?£2 more than before! Throughout the whole experience, not once did the senior staff apologise. Instead, they shifted blame to us, despite the mistake clearly stemming from poor internal communication and lack of clear procedure.
This experience left a terrible impression on my aunt as an international visitor, and frankly, it was embarrassing. Mistakes can happen, but it?s how staff respond that matters?and in this case, the attitude was dismissive and unhelpful. I strongly urge senior management at Sainsbury?s to review their training and customer service standards. This kind of approach not only lets down customers but damages the store?s reputation.
