I was treated by my son and daughter to a 2 night stay here for my 65th birthday. When I walked into the room I was sharing with my daughter I was so surprised. We are assuming my room had been upgraded for my birthday as compared to the normal room my son had my room was massive. I loved it. The grounds are great for exploring and the peacocks and rabbits roaming about are a joy to see. We had a drink in the bar but didn't try the food as my son is a vegan and so we tried different places. All I can say was my 2 night stay was amazing ? all three of us loved it and would love to come back.Rooms: The room I stayed in was fantastic. Big roomy comfy bed

Really enjoyed our stay here, its a beautiful hotel with lots of historic things to see and beautiful gardens. Food was lovely especially breakfast. Room was clean and lovely only little gripe is 1 bath towel between two adults isn't enough. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend this hotel.

What a shame! We visited this past Saturday (9th March) for a treatment & spa expeience for my partners birthday. The Spa staff who greeted us were lovely & we thought that this was going to be amazing, unfortunately this is were our good experience ended. We went into the locker rooms to change. I have to say it was the most dirty locker room I have ever needed to change in. It clearly has not been cleaned anytime recently & had a pretty bad smell to it. The locker I was allocated I quickly realised did not lock so I had to go back to the spa staff to ask for another. The spa lady said that she would report it to maintenance. The female changing rooms were the same & apparently no lock on the one cubical door either! We then went for a luxury mud treatment... This was not what we were expecting. I will try to sum it up briefly, it was 2 tubs of mud that we had to apply ourselves then press the on button & steam will come down. The on button didn't work, I had to telephone someone to come down to look at it for us. The steam did not come on within 10 minutes it came on after about 15-20 minutes. The shower to wash the mud off (in the steam room) was like a trickle so we had to use the main shower. The steam room door did not shut (it has a gap so the steam escapes). The main room door had no lock. The main thing which spoiled the whole experience was the thick black dirt on the grout everywhere in the room made us feel uncomfortable & not in a relaxed state. We couldn't wait to get out of there. The sauna was great however multiple wooden slates were loose causing my partner to slip. Reported to the Spa staff - they would get maintenance to look at it.There is not enough seating in the chill out area, people were waiting to come in so we went to the quiet room. (The air con unit in the ceiling is broken to it makes a clicking sound- not relaxing)We then went for our hot tub. We asked for a prosecco - none available due to a delivery shortage. I asked if anyone could get some from the Castle Bar to which I was told I don't know. The hot tub itself was great if not a bit in full show of passers by!I then went to shower. The left hand shower in the mens is broken, ice cold water only. The right hand shower was so dirty & had no soap in the dispenser. Again mentioned it to the spa staff- advised they will speak to maintenance. We then went for our cream tea, the scones & drinks were great! The room itself again was dirty & clearly had not been cleaned. We ate quickly & left due to feeling uncomfortable. At no point did anyone ask if were ok or had a good experience.I emailed the hotel detailing the above & asked for a manager to call me. 10 days & waiting still no reply or acknowledgement.

Amazing grounds, 800 years of history. I only walk my dog around the grounds but the many people I speak to who are staying at the hotel say it's brilliant!

A lovely stay, been here twice now with family. The peacocks walking the grounds make this make even more special. We went during spring so perfect time to see this creatures showing off.Nice and. good sized castle with ground to walk. Although, I wish the grounds were better kept. We'll be returning again during the spring.Jag

OK, so read the reviews before we visited, and tbh whilst there's some relevance to the hotel being tired and needing some serious investment, honestly, we had a great time. The staff were all super attentive, with nothing being too much trouble. The only real gripe I have is the cost of the food. Guys, £7 plus for the mixed bread starter ? You really are letting yourselves down here. Even our waitress was embarrassed. Do yourselves a favour, sort it out. Most reasonable customers, due to its age, will accept the castle being a tad rough around the edges, but when it comes to blatant taking the mick, you're letting yourselves down.

This is a historic building, steeped in stories in a beautiful setting. The grounds, tavern and restaurant are open to the public. Famous for its peacocks roaming the grounds. Please note that it is not disabled friendly at all. There is no disabled access to the spa (which is fabulous if you don't have any mobility issues). Steep path down to the Bazaar Spa, then a large flight of stairs to get in ?, I nearly gave up. However I'm glad I crawled up the stairs on my hands as it was a lovely morning. Changing rooms are also challenging if you have mobility issues. I've certainly used to my weeks worth of "spoons" navigating my way around the spa and to the "Tavern" restaurant with my mobility aids. Was cross that there was a "non disabled" luxury sports car in the disabled parking spot. The tavern had not received my dietary requirements, despite me pre emailing, talking to the booking department (after 16 attempts to get through!!!) and telling the reception and spa reception on arrival. The taverns customer service though was second to none, going through what they had available and being super accommodating so 5 stars to them! Just to reiterate for any management looking at this, the staff at the Tavern were wonderful and could teach the rest of your staff what great customer services should look like.We booked using red letter day vouchers, then after discussing with another group at the spa discovered they had paid 60% less using Groupon . The castles Facebook page also sometimes has some amazing special offers.Safety: Not suitable for people with mobility problems.
