Due to mobility issues it took me quite a long time to reach the Castle. I don't think I could have done it if my dog hadn't helped pull me up the incline.Once there some excellent views down over the surrounding landscape.I noticed a lot of straight joints on abutting walls.Apparently it was a Welsh Castle modified by the Normans.

Fab castle, a good walk up the hill. The gate you go through to follow the path is the access to at least 2 properties. There are only 5 parking spaces. But the climb was worth it, really enjoyed it!

I can never understand why these ruined Welsh castles are not as celebrated as the larger English castles built by Edward the first. The setting for dolforwyn is simply breathtaking and the ruins themselves are amazing plenty left to see. Lots of information boards to help you get a picture of what the castle was like in its heyday a must for anyone with an interest in history

Narrow lane to drive up to parking. Parking for about 4 or 5 cars.A short walk up to the castle. 1st part is very steep.Story boards around the castle explaining its history.Lovely views from the top. It's just a stop off point, not a day out.

A single track road for about 1.5 miles of the A483. Free parking for about 5 cars. A long uphill walk (moderate) to the castle. Stunning views from the top. Take a picnic. Free entry. Well worth an hour or so if you are passing. No toilets, facilities etc.

Dolforwyn castle stands high above river Severn.Four miles away on the other side of the hill directly in front of Dolforwyn castle is Montgomery castle and England, which Henry III built in 1220 on the English side of the river in response of growing power of Llywelyn's grandfather, Llywelyn ab lorwerth.Fifty years later his grandson was just as powerful. He replied by building Dolforwyn on the Welsh side.As building at Dolforwyn began so did the reign of King Edward I.Llywelyn ap Gruffudd refused to pay homage to Edward I and a cold war-style stand-off began between them . It ended in 1277 when Edward I attacked and real war began. On 31st of March the English destroyed Dolforwyn town and besieged the castle. Unfortunately , Llywelyn ab Gruffudd haven't sent any help to the castle, so on 8th of April 1277 Dolforwyn castle surrendered due to luck of water. After Llywelyn was forced to retreat into his Gwynedd homeland in 1277, Edward Igave Dolforwyn Castle to Roger Mortimer, a Marcher lord, as rich and powerful as any Prince. When Roger Mortimer took over, he moved the settlement down into the Severn valley. To this day it is known as Newtown.Mortimer also immediately set about making the castle more self-contained.Llywelyn's 'new castle over the river Severn' , was the last Welsh great castle. It was updated with new towers and other buildings by Roger Mortimer. The most important addition was a well.Mordimer had his workforce dig down 6.5 metres (21 feet) through solid rock to secure an independent water supply for the castle. The car park just outside of the castle walk. Not very big though. The walk from car park to the castle ruins took us about 10 minutes up the hill. Very good exercise for your legs I would say. :)It was no one else when we were visiting, so spent quite a good amount of time walking around, reading all the information boards and enjoying the views from the hill.Definitely recommend it!
