Exploring the Peloponnese tour October 2023. What a fantastic trip! From the amazing knowledge of our 2 guides Michael and Nota to the small boutique hotels to the amazing foods and local wine , to the way the itinerary was arranged so we would not be bumping shoulders with larger groups at the more well known sites it was all marvelous. In addition to all this what also shone was the pride that Michael and Nota had in their profession not just in making sure we all understood the history of the places we were visiting but that each and everyone of us on the trip had our personal needs taken care of ,from taking excellent care of my special dietary needs , all the way down to what shoes to wear that day because of the terrain we may have to cover or how we?d like our coffee.

I have been on 3 quite outstanding trips on a gulet with Peter Sommer Travels, the last one in September this year when we cruised along the Southern Turkish shore visiting a number of extraordinarily varied ancient sites interspersed with anchoring in beautiful coves, lots of swimming and kayaking. The gulet was extremely well run, comfortable and the Turkish food, prepared by a master Turkish chef delicious and always different and supported by Turkish wines chosen and explained each evening by our brilliant host Peter Sommer himself. The crew were very cheerful, efficient and clearly enjoyed looking after us.Peter is a very gifted, articulate, experienced and enthusiastic archeologist who cut his teeth walking in the footsteps of Alexander as part of his PhD and in doing so clearly developed a deep love, knowledge and empathy with the Turkish people who live in Lycia; he speaks the language of course and we were greeted wherever we went by local people who clearly regard him as a friend. We even ate a lovely lunch in a house perched on the side of a mountain prepared by the family he had stayed with many years ago.The itinerary was very well planned, flawlessly executed and catered for all of us. No one was ever bored nor did our interest ever flag over the 14 days we spent on board.I cannot rate this trip nor the organisation who run it highly enough. I am already planning where to go with Peter and his team for 2023.

My husband and I went on a prior Peter Sommer trip seeing classical Rome fall 2018 that was extraordinary. Guide superlative. Would recommend fully. June 2019 gullet Turkey trip not at that level. We had a very poor guide in all respects except archeological expertise and also a first time crew. Combined, they disembarked my husband and two friends on an obviously unsafe floating dock which was lurching in waves and did not reach the beach on the very first day. The two friends went into the water and my husband sustained a bad leg injury trying to avoid the waves. Later landing parties went to an attached dock to which a small landing fee applied. The guide never acknowledged his terrible judgment in permitting this unsafe disembarking and at the end of the trip shrugged at me saying, "these things happen." My husband did not make even one excursion. After we hiked to the marvelous site of Patara, we realized the guide could easily have arranged a car to get my husband there so he could have seen it as well. Yet the guide was mystified when we complained he had not thought of this. The man is an excellent archeologist, but he rotely moves through the tour with no flexibility or attention to the guests. Our trip was spoiled by guide Serdar's lack of guiding skills.
