I've been eating at the Angel Inn at Grosmont for over two years now.
I have travelled all the world, and dined at many restaurants which many would kill to try, both great and small. And of course I have a great fondness for classic British country fare, as one quite frankly should.
The Angel is, first and foremost, a perfect example of a country pub.
What does this mean? It is not too grand, and not too shabby. It is perfectly cozy, and charming, and just the right size, with a good variety of ales & beers, all impeccably tended to by the lovely staff headed by Chloe.
But it is the kitchen that transforms this already outstanding example of a pub into a destination most worthy. This is run by Jim, a former serviceman of considerable boistrous charisma, who has self-evidently worked in several much less unassuming establishments in his previous lives. This is a man who brings to everything that leaves his hands the touch of a master professional.
This means not just finesse, but creative vision, done without pretence, so as to appeal to a broad audience without alienating those who crave simple and recognisable dishes, or people such as myself, who have had the good fortune to both love that, and have tried dozens of Michelin kitchens on top of it, and sometimes need a little nod of heartfelt glamour for the sake of it.
Try the pigeon pie. It's a masterclass.

Came here for a stop on a long journey and thought it would be nice to get something to eat. The lady gave menus to the table next to us and not us, which is no issue, clearly she just didn?t see the 4 of us. So I get up to get menus, once again she didn?t see us after taking the order of the table next to us, so we go to the bar to order, just for her to say they don?t do food orders until 13:30 (it?s 12:00 for reference). Third would have been fine if we didn?t see and hear her take the order from the table next to us. It just felt plain rude.

We came upon this lovely Pub / Restaurant today after a walk around the Castle.
We were lucky and got a table for two!
We had delicious food, presented like a fine dining establishment with loads of flavour!
The chef even tweaked the dishes on the menu to suit me, which was very much appreciated. This resulted in the best Cod dish I've ever had :)
We had starters and a main course each and all 4 dishes were fabulous. A pint of Butty Bach and a glass of Rosé complimented these!!
Outside is a beer garden with an area to play boules if one should wish to!
The welcome, the service, the food and a quirky interior has ensured our return and recommendation to everyone.

This unassuming local pub hides an exciting menu of stunning food! Did not at all expect a fine dining experience when I stepped into this charming country pub. The menu was a delightful surprise with not your average pub grub offering. The hardest part was choosing between all the interesting sounding dishes! We enjoyed everything we ate at the the Angel Inn. The rabbit crocket and seafood stew were particular stand-outs. I was also very intrigued to see some interesting wine options like a Romanian pinot noir which I quite enjoyed!

My favourite pub. Chloe and Jim are terrific hosts, the food is amazing and they have Butty Bach Wye Valley beer. What more can you want from a village pub?!?

We have been so lucky to have The Angel on our doorstep. We have been able to have delicious take out meals without leaving the village, the roast dinners are to die for and the home baked bread is immense! Also able to wash it down with our favourite Malbec! ??

Lovely Sunday lunch and excellent service. Waitresses kept coming to see if everything was ok and whether we wanted anything else.
Good choice of gluten free options, including puddings.
