I really didn't know what to do when Woolworths shut down. Where else would I go for all those funny little nick nacks you need in a house? Clothes pegs? Washing up bowls? Those little plastic baskets that no one really seems to know where they came from? Well, I was saved by Canton Discounts. It amazed me how many times I ended up popping in on my way home to just 'pick something up' and nearly always came out with something extra I hadn't realised I needed. It is a full little shop, with bits of everything including hardware, plastics and even a few toys and novelties. It is reasonably priced and the staff were always very friendly!

This sort of shop is perfect if you're looking for some house wares or kitchen paraphernalia. It's a no-frills place and it's pretty cheap but when all you're looking for is a bucket or a gardening fork then this place is perfect. I've popped in here a few times looking for kitchen utensils, and the last time I needed a baking tray. Although I didn't find the type I was looking for (they did have some but sadly not in the size I needed) I did pick up two decent-sized disposable trays for only a pound which were perfect for that evening. This was really handy for me as I couldn't think of anywhere else in the area I could go, let alone somewhere that would still be open. As well as kitchen stuff you can get tools, pet supplies, toiletries, cleaning utensils like mops and brushes, and I think I even spotted fishing baits in the window. Basically this place sells all of that homely stuff that you never realise you haven't got until you need it. It's also cheap enough to rival the big supermarkets and is far handier because it's within walking distance of loads of homes, whereas most of the big supermarkets that sell this stuff tend to live on industrial estates or places that aren't really near residential areas.

I love a bargain, so naturally I flock to stores like Canton Discounts. It's the ugly stepsister of bigger high-street chains like Poundland, but worth a visit if you're in the Cowbridge Road East area and in need of cheap-and-cheerful house wares. Carrying your usual selection of pet supplies, cooking utensils, and gardening tools, Canton Discounts is an ideal shop to gather essentials that would cost double the price in grocery stores like Tesco or even Asda. I was surprised to see items like fake flowers and vinyl flooring stacked alongside its makeup and greeting cards ranges. Don't stop by expecting a spacious and sparkling shop, but Canton Discounts is perfect if you're tired of paying top dollar (or pound) for everyday items you know can be sourced cheaper.
