Lovely place first open in 1542 and still going

Ye Olde Bull Inn in Caerleon is a beautiful historic pub with roots dating back to the 15th century. Once thought to have served as the priory?s bakery and kitchen, the building still holds traces of medieval and even Roman architecture, with original beams, Perpendicular-style windows, and vaulted cellars that whisper stories of the past.
Sitting outside in the heart of this historic town, in comfortable chairs under the charm of centuries-old walls, was a real pleasure. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff were exceptionally friendly. Everything was spotless and well looked after. We had a truly lovely time and would happily return ? it?s a perfect place to soak in history and relax with good food and great service.

Nice pub. Had a local feel for a tourist area

Popped in for a drink with a friend on the evening of Friday 18 July as booked to eat elsewhere and was early so had time to kill. First visit to the pub and it was very lively. Looked like a group of teachers enjoying the start of the summer break so the place had a joyous atmosphere to say the least. Quick service, comfortable area to sit and chat, and a very nice hour was passed enjoying a drink and getting a feel for the pub, which we decided we'd definitely return to when next in Caerleon. The pub would be a lovely place to visit during the winter months when the old charm will be enhanced with the log fires burning. We particularly enjoyed talking with Jess, the security lady we met when entering. We managed to chat with her on a couple of occasions during our visit and she was very friendly, giving us lots of tips of all the best places to go locally. She made us feel very welcome as we were new to the area and didn't know our way around. She is a great asset to the pub and we really appreciated her cheerful and warm manner. So, our first visit definitely won't be our last.

Food was nice, service from the guys was good.
Atmosphere a bit lacking but it is a Wednesday night.
Menu is small, but that?s good because the food they served they did well.

Just tried to get food at this pub and we?ve been told that they?ve had to close the kitchen because it?s been really busy. We only wanted some small plates and drink. No alternatives were offered and no welcome as we came in. No sign of food menus either on the tables. Had a nice atmosphere and lots of potential? not much pair seating from what I could see.. tables are for big groups. Bit disappointed I couldn?t eat here today.

Some pros:
- good food, came hot and fresh. We had fish n chips, lasagne snd veg Wellington. All nicely cooked. Good presentstion
- interesting decor, offers lots of private nooks inside
- dogs allowed and gave us a dog water bowl
- plenty of space outdoors
- very fairly priced, you get what you pay for
Cons:
- very, very filthy glasses (see pics). I had to ask to change 3 glasses.... one wasn't even washed and completely sticky. Staff apologised but shouldn't happen. Maybe a dishwasher check is overdue.
- limited tea selection, only black tea. It was served without a plate, no tea spoon, didnt ask if I need sugar. A little inexperienced staff on customer service.

Waited at bar to order food, barmaid had back to me and carried on cleaning wine glasses, served by gentlemen in the end. The barmaid had a face like doom.

Went on a Thursday for lunch, great service and lovely seating indoor and out. The food did take around 30 mins but it was really nice and reasonably priced.

Lovely bar and staff but the food is really really overpriced for what it is and what you get, we'll go there again to drink but not to eat.

Good selection of beers and ciders - we came for food at lunch time, only 1 other table at the time. We arrive about 11.30, the sign outside said 11.30 for food, but when we tried to order the food wasn't being taken until 12, no issue with this. Order taken, it took over an hour for a pie and a couple of sides to come, we had to remind the server and suddenly the food came, when the pie came 5 minutes later, the peas were dehydrated and hard, and the gravy clearly had boiled over in the microwave. Very disappointed in this. The staff were mainly distracted by phones. This was a Monday lunchtime service.
Atmosphere is nice with music in the background.
This was on the 17th March.
