Our grand children did an art course which they loved, and we had lunch in the cafe. It was a good day

Good municipal gallery, has a good sprinkling of newer work alongside what you might expect, well contextualised. Very helpful staff.

Very poor cafe with lacklustre staff. A waste of what could be a lovely arty space at little expense, just imagination. Why is the only Lowry hidden away at the back of the cafe? Bet most people miss it.
Northern Spirit works are so squashed in and badly lit you can't really view them.
Stumbled upon a photographic exhibition that wasn't mentioned anywhere or signposted.
Tired energy all round

Great free art gallery. Would highly recommend looking at the Northern section. The Grimshaw's are particularly great.

A great art gallery, with a wealth of knowledge both local to the North East and wider afield! Great place to go and explore

Disappointing. I'm sorry but everytime I visit this cafe the staff seem to be in a rush to get home, the service is efficient but abrupt. I was made to feel unwelcome by the staff member who served me as if my arrival was onerous to the cafe and at 2.30pm I got the impression they were about to close. The staff are usually hidden in the kitchen but there doesn't apear to be a necessity for this as the cafe is usually very quiet. I would have appreciated more information about the 'ciabatta ham and cheese toastie' as I ordered the toastie without realising there was only ciabattia bread on offer. I'm not fond of Ciabatta bread. The cappucino I ordered was too hot to drink initially. The salad was fresh and plentiful. The food plate was plonked in front of me without any engagement. Also there seems to be an over emphasis on cleaning up though I appreciate this is important. I'm writing this because the Laing Art Gallery is such a beautiful space it really does deserve better. In my opinion the cafe needs to meet the standards of other enjoyable cafe spaces in different cities and where the service, food quality fits in with the ambience of the venue. Maybe I just happened to be unfortunate but as this is the second time this has happened to me I felt compelled to say something about it. Sorry if this appears unreasonable but it's just how I felt. I was supposed to be having an enjoyable experience visiting the lovely exhibition 'with these hands'. ?
The cafe really is an amazing space with so much potential. This is what frustrates me.

What a great resource for a city, fantastic works of art, and there was an exhibition which was pay to enter and we didn't do that owing to car parking time running out.

Brilliant collection. It?s just the lights on the ground floor are a bit distracting when viewing the art

Free art gallery with a cafe and a shop.
There's also an exhibition currently (With These Hands) that requires an admission charge, but I couldn't find information about it (on-site) so I chose not to visit it.
However, the free exhibitions are nice on their own. Definitely worth a visit.
