Our grand children did an art course which they loved, and we had lunch in the cafe. It was a good day

Good municipal gallery, has a good sprinkling of newer work alongside what you might expect, well contextualised. Very helpful staff.

Very poor cafe with lacklustre staff. A waste of what could be a lovely arty space at little expense, just imagination. Why is the only Lowry hidden away at the back of the cafe? Founded in 1901 by Newcastle businessman Alexander Laing, the Laing Art Gallery today is home to an internationally important collection of art, focusing on British oil paintings, watercolours, ceramics, silver and glassware.
The Gallery holds regularly changing exhibitions of historic, modern and contemporary art, and events including artist and curator talks and family activities.
