“The manager here did his best to repair my malfunctioning Biro/refill - which I'd purchased in the shop some years ago. He had it for a couple of days.Despite his best efforts, repair wasn't possible - but when I mentioned (casually) that the fault was long-standing - he replaced the Biro, for free!”
