Recently (with the past year?) been taken over and some things are better. The decor is more modern and "luxe" (if a bit "Essex"). Seems to be trying to emulate The White Horse in Ridgewell a little but still keeping more of its country charm than that particular establishment. Had a roast here and it was good value and well cooked. Beef was advertised as "treacle cured" ....didn't taste that but lots of it. The yorkshire was fab and I liked that things that are sometimes "extras" (cauli cheese/red cabbage) were standard. Service was good and I would go back.

Firstly, this has such a lovely country pub feel to it - especially in winter, with the fire lit (the fire smelled so nice). Spotlessly clean, lovely decor and comfy seating. Had an excellent glass of red wine at a reasonable price. The menu selection was good, but there weren?t nearly enough vegetables - either as part of the mains or available as sides. That was a bit of a letdown, as I like meals to feel balanced - especially when eating out. Our mains were cooked very well. Dessert was a bit underwhelming. Could be an absolute gem with a few tweaks and I?ll visit again.

Sunday lunch for 15 to celebrate my parents' 62 wedding anniversary. Our family included 3 small children, 2 vegetarians, and 3 vegans.\n\nEveryone was looked after and loved their food. My choice was the beef and it was the best roast beef I've had anywhere, it could not have been more tender.\n\nFor any vegetarians reading this, my brother-in-law really loved the cauliflower "steak".

What a dreadful disappointment. Having gone to the Plough for a much looked forward to evening the meal was underwhelming. All I requested was a steak and salad. The menu had steak night for 2 people with a choice of 4 sides - the sides were mostly chips or cabbage. Instead I requested just one side of a simple salad. When the meal was served I was given cooked cabbage. When I queried this they said they had no ingredients for a salad!!! Even though on the menu was a burger with coleslaw and a cooked tomato was served with my husband's steak. What establishment has no salad ingedients? On the plus side the steak was nice. We will not be returning.

Poor service for a high end establishment, what a disappointment for Fathers Day, whilst wanting to support our local pub. The pub didn?t appear to be at 50% capacity when our table was booked for food. The owner showed us to our table, quickly followed by waiting staff offering us menus. She was quick to walk away when I offered feedback and seemed dismissive. Half a hour later without seeing any staff again aside from a waitress bringing drinks to a nearby table then walking back inside without glancing our way. For somewhere that offers £20 + discretionary service charge you?d hope their waiting staff would be attentive. We came to their opening night which was understandably heavily lead by their manager, seems like he?s still running the show with staff looking ?busy? without being there for their customers. Such a shame given such a beautiful setting and new decor.

Our first time visiting the newly refurbished Hundon Plough. We had a very pleasant experience all round. The food was lovely although the duck Bon Bons would have been complimented by a sauce as they were on the dry side. The roast lunches were delicious and the portions sizes are fantastic! We were slightly put off by the prices of both food and drinks and not overly keen on the miss matched modern ?Essex? decor and music in such a local country pub.

Good points - \nBeds were comfortable and a pretty view from the window.\nLady cleaning on the morning friendly and asked for feedback.\nFair sized car park.\n\nBad Points -\nVery run down pub and rooms! Needs updating.\nThink we saw two people the whole time we were there and they were both staff. \nNo chef on a Friday evening so no food available.\nWhen booking it states breakfast included however on arrival we were told we'd have to pay £8 pp for a hot breakfast as only a continental breakfast would be available as the cost of the room did not cover the costs of a cooked breakfast. I was told someone had already complained. Breakfast is served only between 8.30 & 9.30 very disappointed so went elsewhere for breakfast. False advertising as should state when booking continental breakfast only. Defiantly needs to be made clearer. \nRoom not overly clean, needs new carpet and a paint all walls are marked. Shower pressure poor. No bin in main room only a very small bin in bathroom. Bath tub felt unsafe as made a noise every time you moved. \nWhen coming back at 00.30 the main door was left open with no one inside as all lights off so anyone could have just walked into the building.. felt incredibly uncomfortable and unsafe. Door should have been locked as we had a key to get back in. \n\nWe wouldn't recommend.

Reserved a table with David and he ensured there would be food available although he couldn?t guarantee a roast which was fine, we were told there was an extensive menu so would certainly be food available to offer. Upon arrival we were informed by a member of staff that unfortunately there was no food available which David was well aware of when placing our booking. By the time we?d arrived it was then too late to go else for food. All other staff were very apologetic and tried their best to accommodate us.

Group of 5 booked for Sunday lunch. We had to wait a little while to get our food due to a large table being seated before us which wasn't a problem. The owner was polite and accommodating. The Sunday lunch is always pretty good here with nicely cooked meat, still juicy and tender (unlike a lot of pubs that cook the roast beef within an inch of it's life). Roasties could be a bit crisper though ;) \n\nNow to the negative...we were asked if we would like to see the dessert menu and 3 of the group decided to order the brownie. After waiting quite some time with no dessert, a member of our group went and chased the waitress up only to be told that the kitchen had now closed and was sorry they forgot our desserts. Pretty poor if you ask me. I mean i'm sure all they needed to do was warm the brownie up and put a scoop of ice cream on the plate?!? The chefs were all still in kitchen.

The only establishment I have gone to where staff don't continue to wear masks. The amount of flies and wasps INSIDE the restaurant was worrying particularly as cutlery was out on the side and open for them to crawl all over as well as the tables and therefore spread germs. Without a wine list I asked for a Chardonnay which the waitress clearly had never heard of and shouted across to the bar to see if they had any. PLEASE NOTE - triple cooked chips is a culinery technique - not an excuse to refry old potatoes till there is no life left in them. Waited 45 minutes for that delight! Needless to say, we will not be going back!

I rang a couple of days before to book a table for 2, I was asked that 7.15 would be better than 7 or 7.30 because of other bookings. We arrived on time ordered drinks and went to our table, being told food orders would be taken at the table. Nice garden with lovely views. Drinks came quickly. 40 minutes later still no food order taken! Paid for drinks and left. I explained what had happened to waitress, she was apologetic. I feel that if they are busy, don?t take walk ins over bookings. Won?t be going back.

Had Sunday roast here last Sunday as a family of 4 got to say was a little disappointed. Have had it in the past here and been very nice and well presented. \nMeat was nice Yorkshire puddings were reheated and sooo hard to cut. Vegetables came in side dish but the carrots were so hard , don?t mind abit of a crush but these were hard!!\nCauliflower cheese was softer and ok but bit watery. \nDaughter had the vegetarian nut roast said it was ok but far to spicy to go with a roast and looked more like a chilli! \n\nDesserts were beautiful presented and best bit of the meal, the brownies looked lovely as did the sundae and tasted lovely. I had the sticky toffee pudding which was nice but didn?t need the cinnamon a personal opinion. \nYoung girls serving were miserable and really looked like they didn?t want to be there. \nThe place it?s self looked tired and was surprised it hadn?t been given a lick of paint during lockdown. The ceiling was still thick yellow and the radiators window sill I sat next too hadn?t seen a dust in a long while. \nIt also lacks atmosphere perhaps a quiet bit of music in the background would help. \nWas very disappointed actually as first meal out in over a year with what should have been a special meal with my mum for a belated Christmas. Sorry but won?t rush back

Not been out in such a long time due to COVID-19, so today hubby said we will go for a roast at the Plough. My husband ordered the beef and I ordered the lamb. I noticed there was quite a lot of gravy on the plate completely suffocating the roast lamb, but as I like gravy this did not bother me. However as I started to tuck into the lamb I realised that I mainly had fat on my plate that had been completely covered by the gravy. I started to cut the fat away but realised as I scraped the gravy off my lamb consisted of all fat. My husband complained to one of the waitresses who said she would take the price of the meal from the bill. This was done, but it had completely spoilt our meal out and the staff could not replace the meal as they had run out of lamb. I feel that today many of the restaurants are all too ready to give money back when all you really want is a decent meal. Not thinking of going back there any time soon.

We have been going to the plough for very many years for regular mid week steaks which have always been very reasonably priced and very good quality. However on a recent visit last month one of the stakes was incredibly tough and virtually inedible. However, and to be fair, they didn?t charge for thatMeal and my supper of liver was quite outstandingly good! The prices have increased recently in the hands of new management.

We booked the Plough Inn, Hundon for 60 people to celebrate an 80th birthday party on Saturday 29th February. \n\nDavid, Neil and the team were very accommodating from the original enquiry, food and venue arrangements right through to the party itself. No request was too much trouble - from booking the whole facility as a private function, to arranging the music equipment, changing the number of people and their food choices, decorations, making space for a projector and screen and opening early to allow us to set up. \n\nWe were able to choose a really good selection of starters, main courses and deserts including crispy fried white bait, salt n pepper squid, pan fried sea bass, Irish stew and much more. They were able to cover all dietary requirements (including vegetarian and gluten free options). And to say the food was excellent is probably an understatement, with everyone commenting on how fresh, warm and tasty it was. The service was really good with everyone served quickly and the staff really attentive & helpful. \n\nWe spread our party between the restaurant and pub areas and the combination of friendly & professional staff, open fire and background music made the atmosphere just wonderful and cosy. \n\nWith such a large party you never know what to expect but the Plough could not have done a better job in any way - it was perfect. Thank you to David, Neil and the team for making our day so special.\n\nWe will be back for a meal sometime soon and if we have another big event to celebrate we wouldn?t think twice about coming back.
