WH Smith or post-apocalyptic ghost town??
Popped into the Stafford branch today expecting, you know... to be served. The main checkout area? Completely deserted. No staff. No signs. Just a sad, empty till point that looked like it had been abandoned mid-zombie apocalypse.
Eventually, I spotted an employee lurking behind some display shelves with a colleague, clearly busy, but not particularly welcoming. I had to ask to be served, at which point he walked me over to some hidden self-checkouts I hadn?t even noticed. When I asked whether the main till was no longer used, he shrugged and told me it?s ?easier this way.?
Oh, and while I was waiting? Another customer strolled out the door, set off the security alarm, and... absolutely no one batted an eyelid. I mentioned it might be worth checking, only to be casually dismissed with, ?She beeped on the way in.? (She didn?t.)
Apparently, WH Smith?s new business model is ?trust fall meets shrug.?
Really strange experience for such a busy town centre store. If you like mystery, confusion, and mild existential dread while buying stationery, this is the place for you.

Absolutely disgusting staff members, while waiting to buy my paper there was a very old lady who was told old pound coins were no longer accepted she got a little upset about it, the way they took her things and said you will not be buying this today and all laughed about it as she left is shocking! 100% not how you treat the elderly or any customers
