Came to Bishop's Castle for a holiday a few months ago in June and ended up drinking at the Castle Hotel quite a few times as it's easily the best pub there! Only one open half the week lol.
The view from the garden of the town is simply spectacular! You have to go outside and see it.
We had food on our first night for my moms birthday and it was some of the best pub meals we've ever had!
My mom had the Beef Bourginon and it was really nice. I had the Chicken Parma which I'd never tried before and it was amazing. My dad had a burger and said it was one of the best burgers he'd ever had!
The drinks were good and dining room and bar beautiful.
There was even a canon and water feature with koi fish in in the garden.
The cappuccino I had on the last night was great too. Just a shame that so many flies in the conservatory, I think a result of the big plants as it landed on my cup a few times and they'd turned machine off so didn't take it back. Would say probably better to get fly problem sorted out. This was in June or just get rid of the plants in there that are attracting them as so many flies on the windows in there. Really the only slight downside.
Would love to come back for some more food and maybe try the hotel sometime.

The manager was so kind and squeezed our family of four in for a quick lunch on Sunday without a reservation at 1pm before she needed the table back at 2pm. Beautiful restaurant and pub interior, fantastic food including a top quality children?s menu which was greatly appreciated by our ?foodie? kids. Stunning, extensive garden area out the back full of wildflowers and a fantastic castle play area complete with canon! Amazing views and just a wonderful place all round. Couldn?t fault it. We would love to come back one day.

March 2025 by Just one crumb - Eating out with Coeliac disease
Amazing gluten free food, and very attentive, knowledgeable staff.
When a good friend asked us if we?d like to go out for a meal to celebrate his birthday, he was considerate in asking me where I felt safe as a coeliac sufferer going out to eat. Sadly, a couple of places that were my ?go to? no longer serve gluten free food, or have closed or relocated. But I remembered one place not too far away, just over the Welsh border in Shropshire, that I was able to enjoy a fantastic meal and felt at ease just a few years ago. That place was The Castle Hotel and they were extremely accommodating.
I messaged ahead first to ensure that they were still able to accommodate me and was reassured that they fully understand how serious coeliac disease is, and they have separate fryers and separate areas for preparing food that?s gluten free. So, on Saturday night a group of us arrived to the beautifully laid table in a stunning old building, with tasteful decor.
There were a few gluten free options, but I hadn?t duck in a long time, so really fancied the roast duck breast with dauphinoise potatoes, carrot and sweet potato purée, green beans and a cherry jus. It was INCREDIBLE!
The duck was tender, cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. The green beans firm, fresh and had just enough bite to them. My favourite part of the meal was the dauphinoise potatoes, they were so creamy with just enough garlic, it really made the meal. I don?t usually have room for dessert but, as it was a special occasion, I decided to try the sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel sauce and honeycomb ice cream, but I asked for a small portion, and it was just right! Beautifully presented too.
Another member of our party has a dairy allergy and a seafood allergy and the staff were very knowledgable and helpful, Nicky was able to eat the meal that she chose and really enjoyed it without having to worry.

Stayed for a night this weekend, and what a fabulous night it was. The hotel is stunning, the staff are amazing, rooms clean and very comfortable, and the food! .... It was probably the best meal we've ever eaten in a hotel. All fresh and tasty, we wished we were staying longer to sample the whole menu.
Small touches like printing an information sheet with walking routes, local information, and the weather forecast for the day make all the difference when you're not from the area. A small fridge with fresh milk just outside your door for morning drinks, rather than just providing long life milk in your room.
We had spent the day walking in carding mill valley, about 15 minutes from the hotel. We would like to try some of the other fabulous walks in the area.
Dogs are welcome, and although we aren't dog owners, it was lovely to see all the furry guests being looked after.
We would love to come back and stay again soon.

After a rocky start not receiving any food despite ordering things turned out well. The staff were hugely apologetic and bent over backwards to make things right for us. Food nice too.

Inside, most tables are laid out for eating and reservations are needed at busy times.
The gardens are lovely with great views across Bishops Castle, but they are accessed via an external stone staircase.
Overall it's a good pub.
I have never stayed in the rooms so can't comment on them.
