Amazing stay at MacKays. Great location. On the Putneytown side right at the bridge to Wick and downtown. Had a wonderful view of the river from our room. A historic building but well maintained. Very friendly staff and a great restaurant. We ate there both nights. They were also on helpful giving us a few leads about tracking family history in the area.

Comfortable room, very pleasant staff always available. Price was very competitive. The location is central to the town and the hotel sits on the smallest street in the country (possibly the world0 - what's not to like?

Initially, had to wait quite a while for someone to appear at reception desk to get us checked in. There were 3 big dogs behind the reception desk but they showed us no interest, either! There were also a couple of huge teddy bears sitting in Reception. The decor was a bit worn and dated, but the bed was comfy and the bathroom adequate. We didn't have dinner there but the breakfast was fine. There didn't seem to be a huge lot to see or do in Wick on a Wednesday evening and the streets were a bit dingy and forgotten-looking but that was nothing to do with the hotel. Handy enough stop-over on route to John O Groats

Excellent and welcoming restaurant in Wick. The food is very fresh, simple (I had Caesar salad, my son had a fish and chips) but excellent. I can only recommend it whether you stay in the area or whether you need to stop during a holiday trip.

Such a quaint hotel, very picturesque and full of character. We were very comfortable and the staff were very friendly and attentive. They went a long way to making our trip go smoothly. The restaurant was fantastic with great food and service.

Enjoyed a delicious lunch in the comfortable bar area. Very friendly and helpful staff. Had our dog with us and the staff made her feel most welcome. A huge bonus for us when a hotel is pet-friendly. If they won't take her, they don't get our trade. This hotel has the right attitude thankfully. Glorious weather today, so the area looked at its best.

We visited to eat. The restaurant and bistro was so busy that we ate in the bar area (so booking essential I?d say) but it was so well worth it. The staff were so friendly and the food was amazing. I had steak which was cooked to perfection along with the hand cut chips onion rings sauce etc (which can so often let things down at lesser establishments) my wife had 2 sublime fish dishes. I also chatted about whisky with the owner who was a lovely gentleman indeed. We shall be sure to return. Thank you.

Mackays Hotel is family owned and guests are treated as part of the family. The welcome is warm and friendly and the rooms are of a very high standard, there?s even a wee tipple waiting for you. Every year we travel north to stay in Mackays and celebrate my birthday in the in-house Bistro, not many restaurants are worth travelling 5 hours to visit! We?ve just returned home from our latest visit to Mackays and are looking forward to our next one. We might even take the train from Inverness next time, as the scenery north is amazing and the hotel is only a ten minute walk from the station, in the centre of the town.

Last month we had the pleasure of enjoying a fine example of Highland Hospitality. Murray and his team managed to maintian a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere even under the pressure of the Caithness Show. The accommodation was quirky and comfortable, the service was friendly and helpful.

My wife and I had an overnight stay, which included a superb meal in the No1 Bistro, as part of a wedding anniversary celebration. We were made very welcome from the moment we arrived and were delighted by the impressive towel-art on our bed - see photo. The service was excellent, and the hotel was warm, spotlessly clean and very well maintained. The breakfast experience was probably the best we have encountered recently - quality produce and plenty of it! Overall a very enjoyable experience, which we would heartily recommend.

Amazing gem of a Hotel on the NC500 in a perfect location. Excellent service and fantastic restaurant, quality of food is certainly a strong 10/10. The room was incredibly comfortable and peaceful, such a good sleep and a hearty Scottish breakfast to start our day.

Very weary from having travelled on the (excellent) sleeper train from London and then on to Wick. Fantastic undersold undermarketed train trip. but if you do go for it, Mackays will add the cream to your cake, and then you lay down on the worlds best pillows. Pity someone has blocked up on old stone building window with concrete blocks. But 5 stars to Mackays. (Pity there are no sleepers to Wick - they'd be full)

"if you know a good hole ....", as my late father used to say. This was our second stay at this lovely hotel and again, it did not disappoint. This is a comfortable, friendly, well-appointed hotel, with lovely staff. The rooms are comfortable, clean and well equipped and the food is good. A greeting tipple in the room is a lovely touch. Thank you and we will be back.

I only went for food as I was camping nearby. Honestly the food is top quality, it is one of the best meals I've ever had. Goats cheese starter and haggis shepherd's pie main. The staff serving were incredibly kind and made sure I wasn't going thirsty. The only reason this isnt a 5/5 review is because I was travelling solo and looking a bit worse for wear after fighting the elements putting my tent up and when I walked in the I felt a bit judged by the lady at the front desk, I was told to wait to see if they could seat me as I was looked up and down. I wouldn't mind this but when I was seated the place was dead, it was a Monday afternoon. Luckily the food and the rest of the staff made up for this.

Day trip from Inverness on the train with my 88 year old mother who can?t walk very far. 4 hours each way with no trolley service. One hour in Wick so we decided to pop into Mackays Hotel at bottom of street from station for a tea and coffee. They said they had a funeral on (I respect that) and they couldn?t accommodate us at all. Really! Is that what service is about these days? Poor first impression.
