Royal Troon is a must-play classic in any Scottish golf journey. Like many great courses, it's tough?but for me, this was one of the most demanding I've played. Each hole presents a different kind of challenge and character, constantly making you wonder, 'What?s coming next?' That sense of anticipation is part of what makes it so special. The course doesn?t give you anything easily, and yet it?s incredibly rewarding. It?s the kind of place that frustrates you and thrills you at the same time. Course conditioning was flawless?exactly what you?d expect from a club with a global reputation. Royal Troon doesn?t just test your game, it pulls you into its tradition and prestige. A stern, beautiful, and truly memorable links experience.

A warm greeting was given by the doormen outside the Royal Troon clubhouse, which is full of history and tradition. The staff in the Pro Shop, Bar and the starter, were just as friendly. It was just as I expected, bearing in mind how helpful Gerrard, in Operations, had been in sorting out our fourball. This set us up for a great day of golf, as we played in sunshine and a fresh breeze.
The Old course is a traditional 9 out and 9 back links course. On the front 9, and with the prevailing wind at your back, is where you will play your best golf. As you turn back into the wind, the course shows more of its teeth, and you try and hang on in order to protect your score.
Over the first few holes, we took in Aisla Craig to the south and the island of Arran to the west. But our main focus was making sure we steered clear of the strategic bunkering. If you are wide of the bunkers, you normally walk up to your ball in the light grass. You have to be quite a way offline for some deep rough to gobble up your ball.
The course was in fantastic condition, with true and fast greens. One of the highlights was a playing partner hitting the postage stamp and then holing his putt for a 2. Well done James! Thankfully we didn?t have to play the Railway (Hole 11) off the Championship tees, which makes it a brute of a hole. A railway line runs down the right hand side of the hole, which is out of bounds, and you have gorse to the left.
Justifiably on the Open rota, it is a great test of links golf, and, if given the opportunity, everyone should go and play.
