Although I arrived very late in the evening, after the hotel reception had closed, there was someone waiting for me and he was very welcoming and assisted me with all my questions and showed me to my room. He took the time to explain things to me so as to rest my mind. The breakfast was very good and the full Scottish was cooked to order and was very tasty. There was plenty of choice of cereals and a continental breakfast. The gentleman on breakfast that day could not do enough for me.It was a very stressful and traumatic day for me but the staff were marvellous and I cannot thank them enough for the kindness and support they gave me through the day. This is my definite place of choice when staying in TainRooms: Large airy room with a good sized bathroom and shower.Safety: Warm welcoming and felt very safeFood & drinks: Arrived too late for the evening meal but the breakfast was very good. The full Scottish breakfast cooked to order was just what I needed prior to a busy and stressful day.Noteworthy details: Excellent variety of whiskies stocked in the bar and plenty of other drinks as well.

Place looks like it hasn't been tend to for years. Rooms are disgusting and everything looks like it is falling apart. Had to wander around the place to find someone to check me in as no one was to be found. Same for breakfast, we just helped ourselfs until someone finally showed up.

The hotel staff are friendly welcoming and the breakfast is plentiful But as soon as you get to the room it?s soul destroying ? the head board is made of carpet with stains , the pillows did not feel clean, the carpet and curtains have not been cleaned or washed in a long time , there?s damp by the window, the WIFI hardly works and let not forget the bathroom The curtain rail is brown with rust , the curtain creamy brown , the whole tap moves around the toilet chIn falling off the floor hairy and the sink rusty In all honesty the room was the worst which is a shame as the hotel is charming and has character ! It urgently needs a handy man a deep clean and it would come up to standard . Also more shower gel in bathrooms Besides this the customer service was good ?? For me a hotel has to be clean first and then charming ! It?s a shame

Prepaid for 2 nights but this did not hold us back to leave the hotel as fast as possible after we had secured a reservation at a different hotel. We were ?welcomed? by a lady with a screaming 2-year old on her lap; I travel a lot but this was a first for me? The room was really dirty, too dirty to sleep in with holes in the bed linnen, used towels from the previous guest still in the bathroom, dirty pillows on the bed, etc. When checking out, around 6pm, I had my story ready to tell (what I assumed to be) the manager why we were leaving, but he was not even interested, didn?t look at me and just told me to put the keys on the desk?. Gut feeling tells me that he?s getting used to guests leaving the same day they checked in. Really, do not go there.

Stayed at the Royal hotel for 2 weeks now, really enjoyed my stay , rooms cleaned every day , staff really helpful, food was great! As I was working away I had to leave in the early hours to go home, the staff made me a packed lunch to go home with! Would highly recommend and will be visiting again for sure ?

A very pleasant stay at the Royal Tain where we were very well looked after in this family-run hotel. When we arrived, upon hearing that we were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary, we were offered an upgrade to a superior bedroom with a 4-poster bed which was roomy and comfortable although not with the best outlook, with a building immediately opposite the window! However this is due to the location of the hotel being on a street corner in the centre of Tain. The Royal Tain hotel retains its historical features and also has been tastefully and comfortably re-furbished. When we attended the dining room for dinner, we asked to move to a table away from a door that was causing a draft each time it was opened, the Manager went out of his way to accommodate us and even provided a small fan heater to ensure that I was warm enough! The dinner menu, although a little limited in choice and not the most exciting of options, nevertheless served generous portions and was well cooked. However, The Royal Tain beats every other hotel we stayed in on our Scottish Highlands tour, with its Breakfast Buffet which was truly exceptional with a very large choice of foods available, as well as cooked options. The family managing the hotel are lovely in their manner and standard of customer service and we would be happy to stay there again.

Great welcome in this family run hotel. They couldn?t have done any more to accommodate our group of 16 guys on a sporting trip. Going as far as to lay on a special meal for our last night.Excellent whisky selection.Rooms were clean and serviced every day.If you want 5 star fixtures with no atmosphere, go pay 4x the price elsewhere.

The Royal Hotel, nearly 300 years old (!), ist centrally located in Tain, next door to a good bakery, the very nice ?Green? Restaurant, pubs and take aways. The building is quite impressive, even Queen Mum stayed there - back in the 60s. The manager ist a very friendly and helpful chap, very supportive to cyclists and motorbikers, service is good, rooms are nicely furnished and the breakfast ist rich and of good quality.Walkability: 5 minutes to Tain train station and only 2 miles to Glenmorangie-Distillery.

Great welcome, family run by a lovely couple. Rooms were clean, perfect for getting your head down, as a group of 16 guys they couldn?t have done any more to accommodate us. Even as far as a special group meal on our last night. If you want 5 star room fittings and to be ignored, go spend 4x the money a night elsewhere. The couple running this hotel really made our visit and I would recommend it to anyone, especially groups traveling together. The whisky selection was vast and excellent, which also made our stay very enjoyable.
