This is a beautiful looking hotel with an amazing frontage. Plenty of car parking. The old building is a little tired in places but this adds to its charm. There is a swimming pool with jacuzzi and sauna. The staff are all very friendly and professional. The table service by Luke in the main restaurant was very good. The food is really nice. This family owned hotel was exceptional in its day and the current owners are clearly trying to bring back that special experience. It is situated about a half hour drive from Straiton park and ride with another half hour bus ride into Edinburgh.

Room red hot
Fan provided I had lodge in the window all night.
Terrible sleep which is the most important thing when paying £130+ a night.
Will not be returning and can't say that the reception where interested or shocked at my lack of sleep.
Poor show

GRIM - dirtiest - most run down hotel I?ve stayed in. The room was like a youth hostel - breakfast was not worth getting out of bed for. The place stank of vomit and was in need of some serious investment. The pool looks like a cess pit and the surrounding was filthy - think verruca heaven. All for a bargain £160 a night - No Thanks.

My daughter and I have just had the loveliest two days spent at the Barony Castle. The food was absolutely fantastic, large portions and value for money, the prawn and salmon salad was perfect. We also treated ourselves to an afternoon tea on our last day before venturing home, and we were thrilled with it. We've had afternoon tea in many places and would easily put this in the top three.
I did have a tumble getting into the bath tubs which are dated and deep especially for a shorty such as me. However the hotel was quick to move us into a shower only room so I would suggest if you aren't quite able to manoeuvre into a bath or like me short, ask for a room with only a shower.
The rooms are all very different, some keeping the style of a castle, some very modern, but all very comfortable with all the amenities.
A shout out to the staff who were the friendliest bunch we met on our travels around Scotland they would go above and beyond to please. A special thank you to Noah who not only greets everyone with that huge beautiful smile with the warmest welcome, he also couldn't have done more for me after my tumble. He's such an asset to the hotel, a larger than life personality but also caring for everyone's needs. Thanks so much xx We will be back...
The hotel is 20 mins from Traquair House (a must visit) and 10 mins from Peebles town (cocoa black chocolate shop also a must visit) Rosslyn Chapel is only 30 mins away and a must visit. So this hotel is perfectly situated for sightseeing or simply being away from the hustle and bustle of life

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at Barony Castle as a last minute get away. We booked the lady marie suite (room 123). The room was spacious, and the bed, pillows and sofa were very comfortable. The bathroom was a good size and the shower had good pressure. What let the room down was the cleanliness. There was large brown stains over the carpet, sticky coffee splashes over the doors and frames, and our coffee cups were not clean (old coffee stains and lipstick around the edge). The coffee machine also had old pods still in it. The room (as well as the whole building) was incredibly hot! We were thankful for the fan in the room. We dined here for 1 night in the restaurant. The steak on the stone was lovely and would definitely recommend! And the desserts and irish coffees were nice at the end of the meal. The starters were a bit of a let down, especially the pigeon and barley risotto! The meat was very tough, overcooked and the risotto was bland. The service in the bar and restaurant was good! There was a bit of a wait between courses/ getting drinks but there was a wedding on at the same time and the staff were incredibly busy! The breakfast in the morning was ok, not a huge amount of choice for bread or pastries, but the hot food was typical hotel buffet breakfast. Overall, it was a nice stay and we enjoyed our weekend but there is room for improvement, especially with the rooms and general maintenance.

Nice stop over when heading upto or down from Scotland. Far enough away from the Edinburgh bike thief's to leave your bike for the night without a worry.
Castle is nice, rooms a bit basic but excellent value and the staff are very friendly.

We picked this place as it?s dog friendly and it?s very dog friendly.
On arriving we were greeted by a very polite and friendly gentleman who interacted with our dog as well.
He explained that the dog was allowed in the bar area and if we wanted him to accompany us for our evening meal/ breakfast he could but only in the bar area, dogs are not allowed in the restaurant area.
The room was nice and big and the bed was comfy.
We ate in the bar for our evening meal, there is a bar menu and an al a carte I went for the chicken katsu burger which was lovely.
In the evening we sat in the bar which was open until 23:00 and just before they closed the bar the manager did check if we wanted anymore drinks before the bar closed.
We had breakfast in the restaurant and it was a self service. There were the usual cereals and cold options and a lovely self services hot counter. Everything was cooked well, hot and tasty.
I took the dog for a walk around the grounds, which we both enjoyed. It was really peaceful.
All the staff are very welcoming, smart, friendly, polite and helpful and everyone was very dog friendly.
Overall a really nice stay the staff make you and your dog feel very welcomed. I left the next day feeling very relaxed.
Would definitely stay here again.

Fabulous hotel and location. Barony Castle wouldn't look out of place in the Austrian Alps. Brilliant food, service and staff are top quality. We go as often as we can. And don't forget the Polish Map of Scotland!

Lovely place for afternoon tea and discovering the great Polish Map of Scotland

This is a very beautiful historic property that unfortunately is being very poorly maintained. Everything is kind of falling apart. The old carpeted flooring is in desperate need of a deep clean / replacement. The Great Polish Map of Scotland, a product of great effort and historic significance, is reduced to a mosquito breeding ground. The water is so dirty that one wonders why the mosquitoes find it a cozy place to mate. I was going to write a long review but I think this video of the window in our room summarises well the state of the hotel.

My husband and I planned on have a large wedding with almost 100 people. As we started planning this wedding, we started hating the idea more and more of how much time, and money, and effort went into planning this. We already had out yearly trip planned to Scotland, and I jokingly asked if he would be ok with an elopement style wedding at a castle in the UK when we went. The idea grew more and more on us. So, we reached out to our immediate family and they were ok with the idea. Of all the places we looked at this had the best packages for the price. We reached out and they sent over some many photos and fell in love instantly. But it wasn't jus the pricing and scenery we fell in love with. The wedding planner, Hannah, was so sweet and really made you feel like you were a member of their tiny town that everyone knows everyone and invites you over for dinner. We booked the wedding late December 2024 and she helped plan everything for the wedding in mid March 2025. All we did was send over our pintrest inspo and she did everything from the alter, to the reception set up, the cake, the dinner menu (all we did was pick), the first look with dad and private vow reading, managing vendors. She even asked questions we didnt even think of that really added to the overall experience of our wedding. The hotel, land, and town were just breath taking. There was not one complaint. There is nothing bad that we could say about this place. The rooms were clean and cozy. The bar and restaurant were delicious, loved cooking my steak on the lava stone. Even getting to and from Edinburg was easy. There is a busy that you can get on in the city and take it all the way through the countryside that drops you off at their driveway. And not to mention they have a farm along their driveway with alpacas. The town had a cute little tavern that the group frequented. The grounds have a lot of history. The wedding alter outside and the tree covered aisle were beautiful. Really trusted the process on this and highly recommend a small Scotish countryside wedding here.
