We had a ground floor room with ensuite walk-in shower. Tea, coffee and biscuits were replenished daily and there was a hairdryer and tv in the room. The bed was a bit hard for us on our first night there, but on request, housekeeping very quickly supplied a soft mattress topper and additional pillows.Breakfasts: Cereals and fruit were self service. Full Scottish breakfasts, toast, tea and coffee were served to the table.Three course evening meals were served to the table. There was a good choice of starters, main courses and desserts and we enjoyed our meals there. We would stay there again.

Just arrived back from a 5 day trip with Newmarket Holidays and was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Having read some of the negative reviews, we were quite worried but it was lovely. Check in was very easy and we were delighted to be given a key instead of those door cards that often don?t work. Our room was lovely, very spacious with a small heater (which we needed on a couple of mornings) and a very smart bathroom with heated towel rail and lovely thick, fluffy towels. Everywhere was immaculate and clean. The bar area is small but, because we were on a tight schedule, we didn?t have much time to dwell in there. The dining room was big and busy but, thanks to the excellent staff, we never had to wait long for our food which, overall, was very good. We had plenty of choices for our three course dinner and the dessert trolley was particularly good. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice of cereals, including porridge, fruit and cooked breakfast. The only complaint that I heard was that kippers were no longer on the menu. Without doubt, the hotel?s biggest asset is the staff. Always polite and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. For a 3 star hotel, I think it is excellent and well worth a visit.

As I was so cold I asked for a extra blanket or warmer duvet. They clearly dont buy their duvets from Dunelm Mill. it was like sleeping under a lumpy bean bag. Only one tiny heater in the room. No double glazing. Room decoration ok but no drawers to put small items in. Plastic strip on the wardrobe peeling off. Black mould in the shower & had to ask for the shower head to be cleaned (black &mouldy) Larger shower head rusty. Food was for mass catering of coaches coming in daily. Quality of food basic. Although all the dining room staff were friendly & efficient. Disappointing and certainly not a "Bespoke Hotel". Vegetarian choice was risotto in what liked like a gravy served with vegetables (potatoes hard).

Called in for lunch on a day out and left with mixed feelings. Soup and Sandwich option was chosen, sadly supermarket bread and luke warm tomato soup, for £9.00 we thought this was a bit over priced. The place is also dated and could do with a spruce up. Only positive really was the staff who were really pleasant.

Staff are friendly, hotel is slightly on the older side but much nicer than similarly priced hotels in this part of Scotland. It's kept fantastically clean which is a bonus. Bed was nice but my lack of sleep came from the noise. I've never stayed somwhere with such thin walls. I stay in hotels nearly every single week for work and this is honestly the noisiest. I'm writing this at 5.51am after having been woken up by next doors alarm. I have been able to hear people in other rooms click they're lights on and off. I can hear very clearly any conversation in rooms adjacent and I can hear people coughing from down the corridor. I'm not being dramatic or exadurating as I say I stay in these sorts of places every week. I simply don't understand how a place can be built with such thin walls!!

The Highlander is tatty. Dated, grotty particularly public areas. Eg the bar would've seen better days by the 1980s. Nowhere on the bed side of the room to plug anything is so you couldn't even easily charge phones; not really on when we are so reliant for our phones as clock and alarm. The advertised evening food options were not available. When I asked at check in (just after 8pm) we were told the only option was a limited choice, fixed price 3 course meal and service was just finishing so if we wanted to eat immediately, they could serve us otherwise we were referred to the nearby Coop or an Indian takeaway. The breakfast stopped us being hungry but every part was clearly of the cheapest. Not a trace of fresh fruit. Full breakfast was 1 rasher of bacon, one cheap pretty tasteless sausage, one egg, one potato scone which was hard and had been spoilt by however it had been cooked. The hotel is clearly now focused on coach parties who no doubt pay a fraction of the per room price we paid and no doubt got their evening meal included in the price while they were at it. If I'd paid 1/3 of what I did I'd have considered the stay just about acceptable because I'd have figured you get what you pay for and I'd have given it a rating of perhaps 5. But instead we massively overpaid for a below par room in a tatty, dated hotel with staff who were clearly doing their jobs, efficiently but without much hope of delivering a positive experience. Anyway ... my advice, The Highlander is one to avoid, if at all possible.

The hotel was ok. The food was good. The rooms were clean. I felt there could have been some evening entertainment for example some Scottish dancing or some bagpipe playing especially as we were on a coach tour.

We have just returned from a wonderful 2 night break at the Highlander Hotel. From start to finish we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Every single member of staff was so friendly, polite, helpful and hard working. Our room was lovely and modern, clean and comfortable, we couldn't have asked for better. We had a three course meal each evening and breakfast each morning, all meals were enjoyed, food was fresh and service was perfect. This is our 2nd time at this hotel and we are already looking forward to our next visit!

Stayed here early this month and couldn?t picked a better place to visit. The hotel is in a great location, a good stop point for our trip further north. When we checked in we were greeted but friendly staff and the check in process was smooth and quick. We decided to stop for dinner, we hadn?t book but wanted to see on the off chance if we could get in. We were shown to our table without an issue. They were serving a lovely menu our first evening, all good came out hot and with care. Our favourite thing about our stay was the dessert trolley never seen this before so was a marvel for us. Only one note, just a little more choice for the menu especially for vegetarians. Thank you for a fantastic stay!!!

DO NOT STAY HERE ITS THE WORST HOTEL IN SCOTLAND!!! We arrived at the Highlander hotel. Upon walking into the reception it was like walking into the 1970s. We were greeted by hotel staff that didn?t know what they were doing and an aroma that spread musk and damp. We were told to go to our room number and given some directions but not which block we were in. There was no signage to say which blocks had which room numbers so we walked around aimlessly trying to figure out where our room was. In the end we asked a member of ?cleaning staff? where it was and they directed us. The corridor was piled high with bags of used towels and bedding. Our first impression of the bedroom was that it was disgusting, the musky smell was unbearable; the bathroom had not been cleaned in months due to the amount of hair, dirt and dust behind the door. The plastic shower strip was dark yellow, around the taps were black. The hook was broken and the wall was smeared with red/brown looking marks. Absolutely awful. No cleaning had taken place there. So much so that we slept in our clothes and wiped down everything with antibacterial wipes! Avoid staying here!! The owner will probably complain saying we should have told them like on other honest reviews here, however, it is an expectation rooms should be clean! Owing to the fact the whole hotel smelt damp and musky the others would?ve probably been the same!! We went to look at the dinner options, there was a set menu with no prices on - to cater for the coach companies! If you?re an individual booking they don?t really care about you. Don?t eat there, go to the Glen hotel instead! Breakfast was dire, small, cold and mass produced. I did not eat it! We got up early so we could leave as soon as possible. The hotel inspector will be informed and should come and look at this place! It?s disgusting! Do not stay here, it?s the worst hotel in Scotland!

Pleasant, Memorable, Quiet and FriendlyWe stayed this with the family as a part of Scotland visit. The staff is very professional, nice, friendly. Often the hotel owner is there too for general supervision which is good. The hotel is located in a nice location with wonderful scenery around. We stay there for total three nights and now w have good memories and that what a tourist needs.

After reading negative reviews, I can see nothing's changed since 2003 when my tour group stayed here for a night. In all my travels this would be the absolute worst accommodation, food and service ever.Rooms: In one word, Awful.
