One of the best museums I've been to! Very large space, full of reconstructions of houses and other Highland buildings, sheep, Highland cows... Each stage provides very interesting information about life in the Highlands. It really feels like we're in the past. We were only able to do about 1 hour because the museum was closing, it was a bit short. I recommend at least 1.5 hours for the full experience. Bonus: no fixed price, give what you want!

All time BEST experience in Scotland. We stayed in Newtonmore for just under a week, and what a hidden treasure! We had no idea about the Highland Folk Museum, which is an outdoor heritage center with historic replicas of Highland life from pre-Jacobite rising days. In fact, this center was part of the set for Outlander's season 1, Tax Episode. Do not miss this amazing site!!

This lovely place was recommended by a friend. I didn?t realize that some of Outlander, season 1, was filmed here, so that was a special bonus surprise (particularly since our trip to Scotland started with seeing Sam Heughan in the airport). This open air museum had SO much to see and explore. Plenty of easy walking, animals (highland cows!) educational historical bits, as well as restrooms and a little cafe and gift shop. Plan to spend at least half a day here, it is well worth your time and it will take that long to see it all.

Visited in October and had a lovely time! Did not realize it was such a large place, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore! Entry is by donation only, and they have detailed guide books available for purchase, which I would highly recommend as the guide book gives you a lot of extra information that is wonderful to learn. The café is also pretty good food. If you enjoy cultural and trade work history, I would highly recommend. Perfect place for kids, tons of activities for them. I would pair this visit with the Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie for a nice weekend of activities. We went to both in one day since our visit was short, but we so wish we had more time for both!

The museum shows how different generations have lived in the highlands and Scotland. As the museum itself was free, parking was 2 pounds which is nothing compared to the work they are doing.

Had a great afternoon at the Folk Museum with our 5 year old grandson who loved exploring the old houses, the croft, the playpark, the pinewood sculpture trail and everything else. We had a good lunch in the cafe too. Our only problem was that we should have gone earlier in the day. We ran out of time and didn't get round everything before closing time. We will definitely return.

The lady at the walk in bit said to me it's donation based and there was a box next to her with a lock and money in it so I went to put a tenner in for a donation she seen it and said stop son give it hear, or u won't get one of the free books of the location she then proceed to put the money away but not in charity box I think this is shocking

Had a great day out here. Very educational and there is a little play park for kids. Lots of buildings to enter and learn history from. Toilets were very well maintained. There is a cafe but we didn't use it. Entry is by donation which is fine. Even though we put money in the box the woman behind the desk was a little pushy wanting more. I personally feel that they could probably charge for entry and people would still pay.

Another fantastic visit to the Highland Folk Museum. Free to enter and relies.on donations and it's worth every penny you donate. Every time we go, we see something new.Today was sheep shearing and a teacher in the school. You pay for parking now, but £2 for a full day is worth it!

This was my second visit to the museum and I love the variety of buildings and friendly volunteers. Car parking is £2 and entry is by donation. It's quite large, and probably takes 2 hours to take a quick look at all of the buildings. I would recommend the guidebook if wanting to understand what you're viewing as there are minimal signs at most places.Toilets are clean, and there are a couple of benches throughout if needing a rest. Cafe and gift shop are also in the centre near the car park.

Absolutely brilliant, well laid out. Learning all about the highland way of living history was amazing. The lady in the sweet shop was a darling . A must if you are in the Highlands. We called in on the way back from the Highland Wildlife Centre. There is no set fee to enter, but donations are recommended ?.Cafe, toilets and gift shop onsite too .

The museum is an open air one set in around 80 acres. At one end is the 18th century settlement and there is a lady dressed in costume who will answer any questions for you. As you make your way to the far end of the museum the buildings begin to get a bit newer including a school and church and a farm (Highland cows, ducks and chickens present and correct)The cafe is a bit pricey but when you consider that entry is by donation only then we did not begrudge paying a bit extra in there. We spent a good 3 or 4 hours strolling round and would highly recommend it.

Great open air Museum with a lot of things to explore and learn! And there were Cows, sheep and chickens. My highlight was the little boat ride with the typical old boats.

Loved this place, and didn?t even get to see all of it in one visit! The 18th century exhibit was used as a film set in the first season of ?Outlander.? They have people around telling about the history. It?s about a mile long, so lots of walking! They have a cafe and bathrooms as well. Donations accepted of about 11 pounds per person, but it is free.

Wonderful way to step back in time! The 1700s township was the highlight by far, and we enjoyed the opportunities to learn at every turn. There?s a small fee for parking but the grounds are free to enter (donations are of course encouraged). There were several tour buses that unloaded upon our arrival, so we felt a bit overrun initially as they pushed their way around trying to capture photos. Once the buses left, however, we were able to enjoy each structure at our own pace and take everything in peacefully. There are bathrooms, a cafe, and plenty of space to enjoy lunch. This place is definitely worth a visit!
