How can you describe this place without using the word wonderful? I do not think it is possible. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The hosts? Fantastic! Made my whole family feel welcome and cared for. Thank you!

Highly recommended. Incredibly welcoming staff and very cozy classic hotel feel! The room was perfectly clean. We had food at the restaurant and the fish and chips was some of the best I've had - strong praise from someone who grew up in Anstruther! The mussels were also brilliant.

Could have given 0 stars if available. Booked ahead for dinner, but was phoned 3 hours later and told due to a technical difficulty in the kitchen they could no longer provide dinner. We tried going to the bar that evening but found the jotel entirely closed.Later on we spoke to a very nice local who told us the hotel had been erratically open/closed ever since being taken over recently.

We did not stay here, only ate dinner. We had a reservation at the restaurant but I really don't think it was required on a Monday evening. The food was okay, nothing special and the vegetarian burger I got was an odd combination of flavors. They did have a lot of whisky options to choose from, so that was nice. Parking was difficult - the lot was full when we arrived.

Wonderful hotel. Really nice staff, comfortable room, great service, excellent breakfast, evening meals really good. We also requested a salad that wasn't on the menu, and it was superb. To cap it all, the price was really good too. Not cheap, but good value for money. Make sure you walk down to the harbour - it is beautiful. Local Whaleingo Steps are also well worth the visit - but if you don't so heights, prepare for a worrying walk!

Popped up for a drink whilst visiting family in the village. Didn?t have food but menu and prices looked fine. I expect the roast dinner on sundays is good (runs once a month). Had a nice chat with the chef who was very friendly. Barman also friendly and the bar was ok. Bar could do with warming up - flowers - some comfy chairs - bar itself looks a bit crap and needs an update and more stock and some proper gin glasses please. Also needs a bit more attention to cleaning but these are easily fixed and it is a new owner so am sure they have plans. The hotel has huge potential and lots of history. Also fab location for exploring Caithness and lovely views and walks nearby. Hope it does well and we will eat there next time we visit.

Went for a meal only as I live not too far away. Had high hopes as we used to regularly go out for meals here 10-20 years ago which was great but, changes in management & certain issues around that meant I chose not to spend any money or time here for several years & looked forward to new management. I had been in a few weeks ago just for a drink & one of the lads was real friendly & accommodating & seemed a good craic. I'm always looking for new places to recommend to my guests so, was excited to see what it was like for a meal. Went in a week or so later for a meal & was rudely snipped at by a younger lass for not having a booking (only for 3!). Food was just ok. For the time being, will be choosing to have meals out elsewhere nearby instead & not going to recommend to guests if they'll be nipped at just for wanting to walk in to get a meal.

The folks who run the show here are incredibly accommodating. I?ve been advised that they are recently under new management. I, with a pair of buddies, are riding the NC500 and have run into some surprisingly miserable and unexpected wet and cold weather. We arrived in their parking lot dripping soaked to the bone and shivering after a particularly harsh stretch of rain throughout traffic and heavy construction to find the town mostly shut down until dinner - which was still a couple of hours away. Seeing the condition we were in and that we were on motorcycles, they immediately let us in and offered to make some coffee to warm us up. We had planned on getting another 20 or so miles up the road before calling it a night, but we couldn?t argue with their hospitality. They even offered to open their kitchen an hour early for us and found accommodations for us, despite that they were still recovering from a long weekend during which all rooms had been booked.Overall the staff are very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Highly recommended for anyone passing through. I?d say it?s worth stopping a bit early or pushing on a bit further for the chance to stay a night here at the Portland Hotel - or even to have a meal and a drink or two. Their chef?s fish and chips are delicious, as is the sticky toffee pudding.

Absolutely amazing, fish and chips were phenomenal. Caroline was very kind and helpful. They let us come in off our bikes out of the rain and warmed us up and fed us, even though they weren?t open yet. Really were the pinnacle of Scottish hospitality.

Took me and 2 other frozen motorbike riders in last minute when we were cold and soaked from the rain. Carolyn got us sorted with food and rooms, would have been a rough night without this place.

My husband and I have just spent 3 nights at this charming hotel, which we found last year by complete accident. It is simply one of those special places that as soon as you walk in you get such a lovely feeling. The rooms and everywhere is simply spotless. The food is really, really good and such generous portions!! It has only been open a few weeks after being taken over by the new owners Sam and her husband Jeff. They are going to put their own stamp on the hotel but without taking away any of the charming features. The breakfast is just delicious as is all the food. The staff, Jane, Lydia, Charles and the chefs can't do enough for you and they work so hard and some of the loveliest people we have ever met. Please do give the Portland hotel a try if you are in the area, great place to use as a base. We can't wait to get back later in the year and we can't recommend this place enough, we give it a 10 out of 10. Thankyou to all of you at the Portland for your wonderful hospitality. We will be back later in the year and wishing Sam and Jeff all the very best for the future on you new venture ???

This restaurant is truly amazing in every sense! We took my brother for his birthday and they made it an experience he will not forget. Upon arrival they left a birthday card on the table for him which was a lovely surprise. Service was amazing and they were extremely attentive. The food was out of this world! We thoroughly enjoyed the 3 course lunch at a very reasonable price. To end our meal they brought us some delicious treats such as tiffin and marshmallows, which was a great touch. I would recommend this restaurant highly and we will be back!!!
