The hotel was clean and tidy, it was everything you need as a hotel. Nice view of the sea and very good service on the front deskThe restaurant. The food was amazing, I recommend the Paris butter just not as much as that comes with the meal, the 1st server/waitress was amazing she was on point and very attentive, the 2nd server/waiter I had not so much, asked for desert menu and he forgot about that for 30 mins when I asked again he acted like he was busy, I finally got the menu and ordered and half of what I ordered never turned up all this time the waiter was spending his time flirting with bar staff. In the end I left without what I ordered.

Lovely rooms.Only minor gripe; for a hotel with 50meg internet, a smart TV wouldn't go amiss.Staff helpful and knowledgeable, a smile would have added a star.

Stayed here just one night during a short visit to the Orkneys. The front desk staff was excellent and professional. They helped us figure out the windows when I didn't know how to open them; they provided power converters since we had American devices and the converter we brought wasn't working; they called cabs for us and provided advice; they stored our suitcases for the following day of adventure.... The list goes on, as we were rather needy patrons for our one night stay. In particular, Darin (not sure of the spelling, sorry!) was very helpful and professional - I think he was in the middle of a double or triple shift too! Way to put the customers first.Location was great, very central. One of the few downsides was thin walls (sounds of someone bathing and shouting at her husband in the next room), but that's hard to do something about without rebuilding or extensive renovations.Overall, great location, staff, and services. Definitely would stay here again!

Stayed here for 3 nights, the hotel is in the middle of renovations, which is good. The restaurant and conservatory are newly done and look great, the staff are always busy especially when the coach guests arrive. You have to book. a table for the evening meal as it does fill up with the coach guests. We ate here one night and the food was delicious, Lamb Shank, mashed potatoes, mixed veg, no complaints. Breakfast is the usual continental, which you expect. Hot food to help yourself too, which can be a bit hit or miss, the fried eggs look like they had been sitting out too long, requested a poached egg, freshly made, they were hard, ( shame on the cook for sending them out). The location is good, Ideal for sightseeing.

We went in for a meal today with 4 of our family, we were taken to the conservatory and seated at a high table. The gentleman who served us was nice to us, however when I went to the toilet, I overheard him reprimading his staff quite loudly. This was unnecessary as from what I observed the waitresses were working very hard. When the food came out it was mediocre at best. Normal pub grub. I won't be returning any time soon. The Indian gentleman could certainly use some training in communication and not shout at the staff in public. Very disappointing.

I stayed at the Ayre Hotel several years ago and little has changed since then. It may even be the same bedding. The decor isn't really the problem, they've updated the lounge and restaurant nicely. The building itself needs some work. The windows are grimy on the outside, no doubt partially down to a harbour location but much of the exterior feels tired. I'd say it is the same standard of a Premier Inn but with less comfy beds and smaller rooms. My bedding was stained and the toilet seat was loose. It was a hot day when I checked in but one of the windows didn't open. Overall the hotel was warm but this is a problem in many hotels. When the hotel bar closes there are loud patrons that hang around making noise but this is a town centre hotel. Good points: The location IS great and the bonus parking is really useful as most car parks in the town centre charge. Isla on reception was very helpful and the cleaning staff were very diligent. An average place to stay but expensive however, Orkney accommodation, especially Kirkwall accommodation, is expensive and limited. I get the sense the hotel is trying to upgrade the building

Stayed for one night in a dog friendly room. The room was basically a copy of a standard Premier Inn type of room, clean and had the benefit of a bath. We didn?t eat here nor have breakfast as we had to be at the airport for 8am and breakfast wasn?t served in time. It is conviently located opposite the harbour in the centre of Kirkwall and just yards from the main pedestrianised shopping street and I got parked directly outside. So, general impressions are that it?s an OK place to say but at £155 for one night ( breakfast would have been an additional charge ) I really think it was overpriced. Do not confuse the harbour in Kirkwall ( where the ferries to the outer islands mostly depart from ) with Hatston harbour where cruise ships and the Northlink Ferry to Lerwick on Shetland and Aberdeen go from. Hatston harbour is around two miles from Kirkwall town centre.
