A small privately owned hotel which didn?t look much from the outside but a fabulous welcome and cosy lounge dining area. The home cooked food was excellent and we were made to feel really welcome. The rooms were modern and very comfortable. Would highly recommend.

The owners were incredible. Nothing was too much trouble. We mingled easily with the other guests because of the atmosphere they created. Great food too !Rooms: Rooms are spacious and comfortable in a courtyard to the back of the hotel.Nearby activities: Close to Jonh O'Groats - ideal for cyclists doing the NC500 or LEJOG.Food & drinks: Nice bar and dining room. Proprietors are welcoming and really nice people.Noteworthy details: At dinner there was a great atmosphere and a lot of the guests chatted together. After the meal we all had a drink in the bar. Really nice atmosphere and owners are lovely.

This was a pleasant stop at a small hotel well located virtually opposite the entrance to the Castle of Mey house and gardens. Easy parking in their own car park immediately adjacent to the hotel. We had a warm welcome from our convivial hosts and the bedroom was good (although not overly large). All the usual bits and pieces and a very comfortable bed. The bathrooms seem to have been recently refurbished, and immaculately clean. The food was just what was required; uncomplicated and well cooked, both dinner and breakfast. I was especially pleased to see Marmite in the pot of jams, marmalade, etc! All in all this was a very pleasant stop. Recommended.

Lovely rooms around a courtyard in beautifully converted outbuildings. Owners were great communicating through our ferry delays. Great night's sleep and a fabulous breakfast. Was a whistle stop stay but would definitely use the Mey as a base for exploring Caithness in the future.

Dinner was nice, but ever so slightly overcooked, but still very nice. Would recommend. Never tried Mey Hotel before for food. Would go back.

On arrival we were made very welcome by Emma, and we had a good feeling as we booked in. Our room had a very Scottish flavour, tartan decor; lovely & warm, as it had turned colder the further up North we travelled. Lots of traditional Scottish decor, and very relaxing after a long day of travelling. The bed was comfortable, especially the Tunnocks treats; and the bathroom with shower was very spacious. We had to book our time slot for dinner, and enjoyed a drink in the lounge beforehand. Although there was no draught beers, there was a good range of local bottled ales just waiting to be tried out. The meals we had were always cooked to order by Euan. Lots locally sourced, beautifully presented and tasted delicious. After dinner there is an opportunity to test out the malt whiskies, in a Flight. Four wee drams tasters. Euan knew a lot about whisky! We stayed for three nights. It's the perfect location for John O'Groats, a day trip to the Orkneys, visiting the Castle of Mey, or just walking along the coast. Castle of Mey is closed Monday & Tuesday, just the days we were there, but you can walk to it & take photos easily. All in all, a very pleasant stay, with friendly hosts.

Whilst doing a road trip along the North Coast 500 and elsewhere, we came across this charming little hotel The owners seem to have taken it on over the last year. Bedrooms and bathrooms were spotless I really liked the way they seem to offer food of the season. We had venison stew and broccoli Delicious. Followed by a delightfully flavoured key lime pie. Yummy Great night sky Went out at 10pm hoping to see the Northern lights? and instead saw a perfect image of the Milky Way overhead . Lovely and quiet spot with a great selection of whiskies. Enjoy

We loved our stay at the Mey Hotel. We were met with a friendly reception from Emma and shown to our room. We had room 5 which was very clean, nicely decorated and very quiet. We ate our evening meal there which was delicious! The menu had plenty to chose from, so spoilt for choice. We loved how the chef (Euan) showed us to our table and served us himself. It was like we?d been invited to lunch. There is also a well stocked bar serving local beers and gin. Breakfast was delicious and fresh - the eggs were cooked perfectly! Emma and Euan were fantastic hosts, happy to chat or to leave you in peace if you preferred. We?d definitely recommend The Mey Hotel to others and will no doubt be returning. Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

Wow what a find ! Perfect stop on our NC500. Lovely food and rooms. Very very highly recommended as a stop off. Also a hugely stocked bar ! The old stables have been converted to 5 double en suite bedrooms. All Scottish themed and freshly decorated. Definitely recommend to friends and family.

We had a lovely dining experience at the Mey Hotel. Our evening began with drinks in the bar. We arrived earlier than expected but this was not a problem. We played dominoes and relaxed after a busy day. The menu offers an excellent choice. The potato and leek soup was yummy! My teenage son wolfed down the fish and chips followed by apple crumble with ice cream. Everyone was exceptionally happy with their food. Emma and Euan are fantastic hosts. They took the time to chat and share stories throughout the evening. I'd highly recommend visiting the Mey Hotel.

The hotel is on the North Coast 500 route and a perfect stopover. The owners are super friendly and helpful .... and are both very good cooks ! The room we had was across the garden from the main building and 'motel style', which was good for us as we had 2 dogs with us. The room was clean and very comfortable with a good bathroom. There is a small woodland area behind which belongs to the property and can be used for dog walking. The food is excellent, good choice of menu with a lot of thought behind it. A well stocked bar and a cafe/bistro which is open 3 or 4 days a week are also a bonus. The Castle of Mey is within easy walking distance and John o' Groats is a short drive away. The hotel is a good base for a 2 or 3 day stay to enjoy the area.

We went to the Mey Hotel for an evening meal, whilst staying at the nearby Granary. Of all the restaurants we visited on our trip, this is the one we talked about the most: but for all the wrong reasons unfortunately. We had booked a table at 8. During the afternoon we received a phone call saying that they could no longer accommodate us at 8 but at 6.30 instead. We should have cancelled but there are few other options in the area. This meant changing our plans for the afternoon and rushing back. As a result we were exactly TEN minutes late when we walked into the restaurant. I immediately apologised and the lady that met us then started to make a massive song and dance about accommodating us and that we wouldn?t be able to have a starter. I was so confused by this - I?ve never been treated in this way before. What was doubly strange was that we were one of only two couples dining. She then got the chef to come out who was similarly weird about our being ten minutes late. He grudgingly said it was ok and he?d do his best with a starter. At this point I was on the verge of walking out, however we had no other options for dinner so I kept my mouth shut. Unfortunately this made us feel absolutely dreadful for the entire meal. The food was ok: very basic stuff, I suspect quite a bit of it, including the soup for sure, was microwaved: pub fare really but with restaurant prices. Soggy chips, boiled veg, that kind of thing. After the massive drama about being ten minutes late, they then accommodated a walk in guest for a meal, about 15 minutes after we got there. Apart from her, the other couple and us, the restaurant was empty, so I remain utterly confused as to why we had to be made to feel so embarrassed in front of everyone in the bar and the other few diners.

This is a quality hotel. The proprietors are lovely and welcoming and the food is utterly delicious. (Chef wouldn't let me smuggle out a chicken and haggis, whisky spiked pie.) The clean, comfortable rooms to the rear of the hotel mean you can come and go freely without disturbing anyone. There's a lovely outdoor seating area next to short woodland walks. We will be back if possible because we completely love The Mey Hotel.Rooms: Spacious with a large, comfortable bed and a great shower in the wetroom.Nearby activities: The Queen Mother's Castle of Mey is nearby, as are John o'Groats, Dunnett Head and dozens of other astounding things to see including several whisky and gin distilleries which give tours - with tasters!Safety: Safety isn't an issue. There's practically no crime involving locals and the roads aren't busy. Note that there is a zero tolerance to drinking and driving. Not even one unit of alcohol is allowed.
