On our trips to Orkney, we like to spend at least one night on one of the smaller islands, and this year we chose Hoy. It's a short crossing from Houton to Lyness, but with a population of around 400, it feels a world away - splendid isolation indeed! Hotel options are limited on Hoy and South Walls, but fortunately Chris and Jade at Stromabank are not complacent! Online booking was straightforward and efficient and our welcome was warm and sincere when we arrived. We were delighted with the view from our spotlessly clean room and enjoyed a very tasty evening meal and breakfast. Special mention for the magnificent view across the Pentland Firth from the dining room.

Spent a week here while working on the island. Landlord was super friendly. Super helpful with dietary restrictions. Make sure you tell them ahead of time so they can order in ingredients for you. Great place, lovely people.

Chris and Jade could not have been more helpful or lovely. Wide choice at breakfast and dinner with a very fully stocked bar. Fantastic cliff walk within 5 minutes from the hotel. Highly recommended!

A really nice family run hotel, they couldn?t do enough for us. The rooms were nice and the beds comfortable, after a couple of blowy days out the super hot showers and friendly atmosphere were a pleasure to come back to. Dinner and breakfast were made to order and very generous, they were also happy to make packed lunches for us to take during the day.

Nice friendly Hotel, very clean rooms and dining room with beautiful over Scapa Flow. Bathroom and bedroom were newly decorated, shower piping hot. Evening meal was nce, Chef was from Middlebrough so Chicken Parmo was on the menu!! A very good choice if you are staying on the island.

Our room was nicely furnished with a new and comfortable bed, and was nice and warm compared with some places we stayed! The owners were very friendly and did us a nice evening meal. The views from the conservatory dining room are lovely on a sunny evening!

Friendly hosts and staff. The hotel has beautiful views across Pentland Firth and Scapa Flow from the conservatory dining room. Our stay was comfortable, the room was clean and the shower very good. We wouldn?t recommend room 4 as this is on the ground floor at the rear of the hotel with no view. The bedroom window is set at head height which was unfortunate. We didn?t ask for a room change, which may have been possible, but on reflection perhaps we should have been advised beforehand. Our evening meal was served quickly and staff were very attentive. The food was ok.

Takes a booking, including a £240 deposit, then cancels it the next day via email and then doesn't answer the phone.It may be a lovely place, the food might be nice, but the customer service is dreadful and unbecoming of the Orkneys.Thanks for your advice that alternative accommodation is available - you can be certain that you won't be getting any of my money when we do visit Hoy.

Just spent 4 nights here, Chris and Jade were most helpful and friendly. The room "#3" was clean, spacious, with good built in storage and a 5* shower. Breakfast was well cooked and filled me up for a day exploring the island. I can't recommend it more than saying I won't stay anywhere else on my next visit.

We had a fantastic stay at the Stromabank Hotel, Chris and Jade were very welcoming and friendly, allowing us to check in slightly earlier as it was a very wet day. The room was nice and clean with everything you would need, and the WIFI was fine for checking emails/social media. It was lovely to have a view from our bedroom window across to Switha and the Pentland Firth. We had a lovely evening meal, the portion sizes were very generous and the food was delicious. Our breakfasts the next morning were also very good. I'd highly recommend and we will definitely return for another visit soon.

A welcome, cosy hotel - a great base for travelling around Hoy. Rooms were well equipped and the dining room in the conservatory has stunning views over the south of Scapa Flow and the Pentland Firth. Substantial helpings for our evening meal, followed by drinks from the bar rounded off a great day?s walking.
