We enjoyed our stay at cannon house hotel. Spacious room and good breakfast? was exactly what we needed for the trip.

Location fantastic.
Check in is a real faff, no one there to let you in, came back twice to get access finally.
Biggest bug bear was the breakfast, exceptionally poor, not like a typical Scottish breakfast at all and it?s plain to see it?s based on budget. Sausages are anaemic (boiled I think) rest was cold, 1 piece of toast. This is not Scottish hospitality , it?s insulting really & if the owners do not address the issue then reviews like this & others will continue to be the norm.
No towels in room.
This establishment seems to be run on the premise of maximum profit for minimal investment and dines out on its location.
We would not recommend the place.

First of all we were given no guidance on checking in. When we arrived we had to call the number on the door, they advised our room and said the key was in the lock but they had the wrong information. this was quickly resolved. Once in the room it was clearly a little dated and old. wallpaper coming away from the walls. The room had spiders and webs in it and the bathroom had multiple spiders and cobwebs which we had to remove. The "double" bed was actually 2 singles pushed together and was not comfortable for a couple sharing as one is always falling down the gap in the middle and not what I expect for £180 double room. The shower leaked all over the floor making it dangerous getting in or out and meant we had to use our towels to dry the floor constantly. The shower also changed temperature from cold to scalding hot at a moments notice which was dangerous and not very comfortable. Finally the room on the ground floor was so close to the dining area and the walls are paper thin so from 830am you are woken by the other guests and the general noise from the dining area. Not what you want when on a relaxing stay. The "vegan" breakfast was appalling. Despite being told there were vegan sausages we were not given any. The meal consisted of a half a mushroom, quarter of tomato, some vegan haggis, a potatoes scone some burnt toast and cold baked beans. There was no effort to replace the meat products by offering more mushrooms or haggis and the beans being cold is just awful. Overall the hotel is more like a guesthouse and requires modernising. The room is overpriced for essentially a twin room with beds pushed together and was certainly not clean. The noise was awful and ruined the stay as we were unable to have a lie in instead woken unnecessarily.

Nice warm room. Great location with sea view. WiFi ok. Plenty of parking in front. Check in over the phone but no issues there. Friendly staff preparing breakfast. Close location to city centre, pubs, restaurant. Overall, I would recommend it.

Not worth the money.Had little to no heating and was freezing cold throughout the night.Least the pub offered more heating than this place.

Unfortunately the deceptive portrayal of the rooms and facilities on the Hotel's website is unforgivable, so it's one star from me. The overall standard of service was also simply nowhere near in keeping with what we were asked to pay.Tragically, the Hotel has evidently been 'modernised' since the last photos were taken, and to a very poor standard overall. The resulting décor is 'modern grey' with white lighting, very reminiscent of a chain hotel but with peeling wallpaper and a crack in the window. The room contained no furniture except the bed, and our double bed was in fact two single beds held together with a double sheet. In the end we were lucky: we asked to view another room, which quite simply looked like the bedroom of somebody going through a rough patch. Exhausted carpet, a wooden plank nailed to the wall, and the TV sitting on a bizarre wooden stand, with not even a desk this time. The entire hotel is apparently being run by one porter (who also does breakfast). We and others were mostly unable to attract attention by ringing the doorbell, so we had to call the porter's mobile. On our second night I let someone in who was unable to get in by ringing, and who later told us they were starting their first shift. The porter also gave us the wrong room at first (without sea view), before later offering us the one we'd booked. To his credit, he did keep our bag at the hotel for us after we checked out, so we could visit the attractions without our luggage.Breakfast was arguably of the standard one would expect at a hostel, certainly not a hotel. Cold beans, a quarter of a tomato, and a quarter of a mushroom with veggie sausages, haggis, hash browns and toast.Overall really quite poor. It made us sad to think that this charmingly decorated building filled with vintage furniture had met its end.

This wonderful hotel is just a few steps from the ferry terminal. The room I stayed in was warm and inviting. The breakfast was made on the spot, fresh and so delicious. Fantastic staff and such a bargain. What a delightful place to stay.

Avoid like the plague , was met at the door , given key an instructions , double room with a sea view , yeah double bed no headboard or mattress protector , 2 chairs at each side no bed side lamps , furniture very dated , 2 seater couch only fit for the bed , sagging , peeling and not fit to sit on , curtains filthy , one of the windows broken and taped up , comb webs so thick behind the couch you could use them at Halloween, no bin in bathroom , miss matched carpet to the point the cream carpet had a big filthy stain , no tea bags , breakfast another joke more like kids portion unappealing, don't order mushrooms you'll only get a pea size bit lol , £85 a night , this place is a joke for the cost , sustainable its advertised as , yeah because there's nothing worth £85 at this hotel , what's advertised on booking .com isn't what you get , had to give one star to write this review

Great location, decent bed and a clean bathroom, but those were the only good parts about our stay at Cannon House Hotel. We booked a Double Deluxe room, which was advertised to be 124sqft with free toiletries, chocolates, and tea. There were no free toiletries and when questioned about it the staff told us that they 'dont do toiletries or soap', despite it being said on the website. The room was nothing like it was advertised in the pictures and was definitely not the size advertised. We booked specifically as we were promised a bath in the room which we didn't get. When we arrived there was a number on the door to call to be let in, thankfully someone was there to let us into the property but the number on the door was unresponsive to our complaints later on in our stay. The bar that was advertised was never open unless it was breakfast, the 'beer garden' was one picnic bench and the staff were never around and seemed to hide in the sea view rooms to watch TV loudly. The decor was tired, dated and definitely needs an update. On the first night the hot water stopped half way through a shower in tbe en suite we had payed for, and the next day still wasn't working so we had to use the communal bathroom in the shabby basement that appeared to still be under construction but in use for other guests which had a very odd sour smell. There was a key in a strange door in the communal bathroom that led to what looked like a haunted dungeon under the stairs. The WiFi didn't work and there was a dirty plaster in our room. The 2nd floor (which we were on) stank of cigarettes dispite it being listed as a 'smoke free property'.The breakfast my partner had was great, however the vegan breakfast was very small and left much to be desired.Overall, I wouldn't stay at Cannon House Hotel again, although we didn't let it ruin our stay on the beautiful island of Bute.
