An Absolute Gem on the NC500 ? Must-Visit!
Stumbled upon this fantastic spot while driving the NC500 and what a discovery! The Tartan Lounge and Bar Restaurant in Helmsdale completely exceeded expectations. The food was nothing short of amazing ? everything we ordered was packed with flavor, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. The burger was juicy and towering, fries perfectly crisp, and the haggis bites? Out of this world.
Service was superb ? friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm. You really get the feeling that they care about every guest who walks through the door. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, striking a perfect balance between a relaxed bar vibe and a quality dining experience.
This place is a true hidden gem along the NC500 route. If you're passing through Helmsdale, don?t miss it ? it?s one of the best meals we've had on the journey. Highly, highly recommended. We left absolutely happy ??

Driving around the Highlands I came across an oasis called Helmsdale, a small lovely picturesque town by the sea. And in this town I found another oasis called The Tartan Lounge. How lucky I was! Allison (hope I got the name right) who owns the place was so friendly and funny. She made me feel comfortable from the moment I walked in. She's also responsible for the delicious food that I had: fried haggis bites and steak pie. I was so hungry after driving for so many hours, and felt great after my dining experience here. After dinner, I asked Alison about scottish whisky and was fascinated by her knowledge. She recommended a few and I had a couple of them. All of this in a cosy place where both locals and tourists seemed to be having a pleasant evening. There was chat and laughs all around. I felt so happy being there. Zoe (I hope I got the name right) who also worked there was very friendly and helpful too. Thank you for making me feel at home! :)

The food is proper home cooked food and the pizzas are amazing, plentiful toppings. It has a lovely atmosphere and is very laid back. But the biggest shout out is to the young boy and girl that works there. The service from them are better than I have had from older servers and their friendliness was so nice to see. They had us in stitches too. We enjoyed it so much we are going back tomorrow.

A very good meal! The meat was very good! The garlic bread with cheese is homemade highly recommended. The bad is the very slow service! Almost an hour for two pints? the food makes up for it!!
