Mixed Experience at Cail Bruich ? Excellent Food, Poor Service
Today, I visited Cail Bruich to celebrate my mother?s 60th birthday, expecting a memorable experience given its Michelin star status. I booked the five-course set lunch menu with a wine pairing, and the bill for two exceeded £500?an amount not unusual for a Michelin-starred restaurant.
The food itself was outstanding?the flavors and presentation were top-notch. I?ve enjoyed similar quality at other Michelin-starred establishments for less money and with greater flexibility. However, the service and management left a lot to be desired.
Upon arrival, a man, whom I overheard identifying as the Operations Manager, handed us the menu and explained the options. The menu was a set menu along with a separate piece of paper that included the supplementary charges. Notably, on the main menu, there was an option for Deer OR Grouse for the main course. The second piece of paper stated that there was a £10 per person supplement for the grouse. Both menus made it seem like an option available to each individual diner?particularly since, on a set menu, one would expect to be able to order it if dining alone.
This however was not the case; I chose the grouse for myself, and my mum opted for the deer. When the manager returned, he told us both had to order the grouse if we wanted it, as it wasn?t available per person but only as a set choice for both diners. When I asked why, he explained it was due to how the dish was cooked. I then inquired what would happen if an individual diner, or three people wanted the grouse?he barely responded and quickly left, offering no clear explanation.
This inflexible and opaque approach felt unnecessary and disappointing, especially at such a premium price point. It seemed they were trying to limit orders for cost-saving reasons, which is not what I would expect from a Michelin-starred venue. Had I been dining alone or with more guests, I believe I could have ordered the grouse freely.
While the food was truly excellent, the lack of transparency and flexibility in handling menu choices detracted significantly from the overall experience. For the price, I expect higher standards of service, clear communication, and respect for guests? preferences.
Would I return? Unlikely. The culinary quality is there, but the service and management approach fell short of the standards I associate with a Michelin-starred restaurant. I hope they reconsider their policies to better serve their patrons in the future.

Exceptional Fine Dining ? A Masterclass from Lorna McNee
Our visit to Cail Bruich was nothing short of outstanding. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional.
The wine pairings were flawless ? each one thoughtfully selected to enhance the flavours of every course. The standout of the evening was the cod dish, which was without doubt the best fish course I've ever eaten ? perfectly executed and bursting with flavour.
The outstanding cookery from Lorna McNee truly elevates the entire experience. Every plate was a reflection of precision, creativity, and absolute culinary mastery.
An unforgettable lunch from start to finish ? Cail Bruich is a true gem and fully deserves its Michelin star.

An amazing meal last night @cailbruich. @lorna_chef and her team are absolutely outstanding, using the best Scottish ingredients and locally foraged mushrooms to create a dinner menu full of incredible flavours and textures. Such care is taken with presentation that each course was pictured perfect. Thank you to all the chefs, and the wonderful front of house staff for an incredible evening. Exquisite dinner! We walked into an amazing dining experience last night. It was a stunning art gallery of seven dishes beautifully displayed and choreographed perfectly to each table. Each dish was cooked and decorated to perfection. Great teamwork displayed between the kitchen and staff too! We were able to savor each dish with time before we moved onto the next dish. Service was outstanding too.

This was our first time dining at Cail Bruich and we were blown away. Couldn?t not fault a single thing! We had the midweek menu and added in the cheese course. The menu itself was incredible, but all the extras like the snacks and petit fours were amazing. The service was outstanding, especially Rhianne, and all the small touches like the menu saying happy birthday on it etc was lovely. 10/10

Absolutely fantastic restaurant and lovely staff, which really surprised me with some interesting twists on dishes, beautiful wine pairings and clear care taken. Also one of the best chef's tables I've sat at, with a comfy position and perfect view of the kitchen. I highly recommend going in blind to the menu of the day. I was blown away by the cod with smoked eel hollandaise, and the cheese course which was more than just a flight, and had a beautiful combination with a frangipan tart. The pairings were great, with the cheese and starter pairings particularly a stand out. Also, the milk bread was so good I wanted more to mop up the sauce with the meat course.

This is an exceptional restaurant, where we had the most memorable meal that we have ever had. We were celebrating our silver wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful evening and felt very warmly welcomed by staff. All the service was highly professional. Every course of the dinner menu was exquisite (7 courses + snacks + extra sweets). This menu is expensive but well worth the money. The fish courses were our favourites. I could not quite eat all of the sweet items at the end; I think perhaps it was because of the richness of the previous courses. But each one was exciting and delicious. The drinks mark-up is high but the wine is excellent. So it was a thoroughly delightful evening and we will certainly come again for another special occasion. Thank you.
