Possibly the worst lunch ever bought. Extortionate, impossible to get sandwich without butter/marg for children, also served inedible stale roll for soup. Very disappointed.

We are zoo members and visit this zoo at least twice a week with our one-year-old child. Unfortunately, the experience is often marred by the quality of the cafe. The food there is consistently subpar, with hot breakfast rolls that taste dry and cardboard-like and scones that are always stale, as if they were prepared the day before. Last week, I couldn't even eat the scone I purchased; it was that bad. To make matters worse, my wife and I had bought one each, resulting in us having to discard one and a half scones.Given that the zoo has a captive audience, it seems they take advantage of the situation by offering substandard food, which is frustrating. As loyal members, we would be willing to spend more money on food within the zoo if the quality of cafes and restaurants were improved. Typically, our visits last only 1-3 hours, and we now choose to wait until we return home to eat. However, for those planning a full day at the zoo, we recommend bringing a picnic or dining at a nicer establishment outside the zoo before or after your visit.Edinburgh Zoo, we kindly urge you to address the quality of your food establishments, starting with the Penguin cafe, which is often open. It would greatly enhance the overall experience for your members and visitors.

One meal deal costs £8 but this is only a saving of 40p over the individual cost of a can of pop, sandwich and packet of crisps. We had 3 meal deals and a chocolate brownie, totalling £26.60!!Wow, very pricey and they even put a contactless (£3) donation terminal right next to the til.

Only had Tuna Sandwiches , they were over priced and actually vile and tasteless, loved rest of the zoo but I wouldn't go back to Penguin

Shame about the bad reviews. Me and my partner really enjoyed it and it's the best cafe we have been to for any zoo's we have visited. My partner ordered a Bacon Roll - it was cooked fresh and was £3 which we thought was a good price.I had Scone which had butter and TipTree Jam, I was given it on a plate in a bag which was great as I could then choose when to have to during the day without it making a mess. There were Plain scones and fruit scones which was great as I prefer plain. This was just under £3 and the scone was a good size. Ordered a drink as well.We had around a 5 - 8 minute wait which we didn't mind at all especially as they were so busy.Lots of choices and would go back!

We arrived at 1pm and by about 3 pm we were hungry so we looked around the zoo to find that only this cafe was open the only one open.We went in and the queue was huge the prices were extremely high, no signs to say what was in kids meal or soup. More than half the food was not availableThe toasties were not fully cooked and the scones were not warmed and tasted terrible. Avoid! £22 for 2 toasties, 2 bags of crisps, a scone and a coffee!
