A review from a grateful American. I knew I wanted to purchase a quality wool sweater while in Scotland. There are numerous tourist-trap gift shops that sell "cashmere" sweaters. With pure luck, I am so grateful that I found Bill Baber, a hidden treasure among them all in Edinburgh. He sells sweaters (jumpers) made of wool, and some silk and cotton. I quickly fell in love with a tan and blue wool sweater. Yes, it has a price tag. I think I paid about $150-$200 for it. But it is now my favorite item of clothing that I own and it will last me for years. I wore it every day through London and France in November and it was often sufficient on its own to keep me plenty warm with only a base layer under it. I LOVE this sweater and I will buy more!! The icing on the cake, however, is Bill and his generosity. I also purchased a lovely pair of blue cashmere gloves. They were the warmest gloves I have ever worn (and my hands are ALWAYS cold). To my absolute disappointment, I managed to lose them within one day. I emailed Bill about my loss and he let me know he had another pair. I went by to pick them up just before I left town that morning, and he was so kind enough to replace them for me. I'm still immensely touched by Bill's kind gesture, such a gift! My only disappointment is that we don't have a Bill Baber in the states. But they offer international shipping, and I will be buying more. If you want a high quality wool sweater that will keep you WARM and last forever, invest in a Bill Baber sweater. He designs them himself and they are beautiful!! Not only are the sweaters and hats (my 2 favorite things) absolutely beautiful and of incredible quality, one of my favorite things is going to the store in Grass Market and browsing and chatting! I wear my green Marcia pull-over day after day in the Boston winter. The color is so intense and it is lightweight but VERY warm, and goes with absolutely everything from jeans, to office-wear.

Shopping here was such a treat. The owner Bill was very knowledgeable and helpful. There are so many beautiful colors and styles of knitwear it was hard to pick just one! It is clear that a lot of care goes into creating these pieces, the wonder Bill was even making the sweaters as we were shopping around. If you are looking for warm clothes in Edinburgh this is the place to go!

I first went into this beautiful shop in 2018, and though I thought the knitwear was beautiful, I thought a bit over my price range. (Especially since I spend six months of the year in the tropics!). But my friend went back and bought a beautiful sweater. After we left Edinburgh, I kicked myself for a year for not getting one myself! The following year, when I returned to Edinburgh, the first place I went was Bill Baber?s and bought a beautiful sweater!So then COVID hit, no traveling for two years, but I?m coming back in September this year, and straight back for another sweater?or two!Forget all those cheesy souvenirs, fake kilts made in China! This is handmade, quality knitwear you will find no where else. AND? take the time to chat with Bill Baber, who is usually there. Really interesting and fun to talk to.Every time I wear my beautiful sweater, I remember my wonderful visits to Edinburgh, and Bill Baber?s wonderful shop in the Grassmarket. Don?t miss this very special shop.

Found Bill Baber's shop in 2000 whilst exploring the Grass Market and visit occasionally when in Edinburgh. Fabulous individual knitwear, made with the highest quality fabrics. Any alterations are usual done on the spot. Wonderful company.

I have not yet been to Edinburgh or the store, but I can?t speak highly enough of their mail order services. I ordered some of their Belle dresses, and they came so quickly, with tracking all the way. Plus, they are just perfect, and gorgeous. Plus, Jack and company were so kind and attentive when I had questions before placing my order. I can?t say enough good things, really, and I anticipate investing in more pieces from the shop. Absolutely top-notch. Thank you so much!

Years ago, at a conference in Albuquerque, we walked into a men?s clothing store (remember, I said, ?years ago?) and saw a Bill Baber sweater. It was pricey, but as someone who?s only public vice is cardigan sweaters, I had to have it. Over the years, I?ve managed to get another. But Baber no longer caters to us guys. But my wife now has a few.If you search the Web, you?ll not find any sweaters like them. They are set apart by their colors, designs, and textures. It?s been a long time since I got that first sweater, but even with the elbow patches it is still the one piece of clothing I have that gathers compliments regularly.

I discovered Bill Baber Knitwear at my local Celtic festival last year. I was immediately drawn to the rich colors, delicate knitting work and traditional Celtic designs on so many of their pieces. I now own a cape and a snood and their newly designed Islay jacket is on my wish list! Every piece is made with care, precision and passion and wearing my Bill Baber Knitwear makes me feel like I am ready to adventure through the highlands! And while I haven't been into the shop, every contact I've had through email and social media has been wonderful! I can't wait to visit their Edinburgh store when I trek to Scotland!
