Very poor service, attitude was awful from the older lady, the male waiter working was nicer. In at 7pm on Saturday, 1 customer in already. Place was absolutely freezing, no music so very awkward and felt rushed as soon as we?d walked in the place, a couple came in and asked for a table, hadn?t booked and the lady had to check if they could be seated when they had no other customers?? Food was average, veg overcooked with the main.

Food was yummy and staff were polite and attentive. Worth a visit if you're staying in the hotel nearby.

We were the only diners at 6:30 on a Saturday night. The place was absolutely freezing, so much so that I actually lit the candle on the table to warm my hands! We were sat beside a radiator that needed bled, but there's only 2 radiators to heat the whole, soulless place so you can imagine. There is no atmosphere, no ambiance,no music, no table covers, too many lamps. The good bit was the food, it was really delicious, hot and fresh, and the service was friendly.Aparently they do takeaway, I wish I'd known before as I'd have been tempted to take the food back to our hotel. From sitting down in the restaurant to getting back to our hotel was an hour lol, we didn't hang about.

Staying at the hotel we ate there twice. First time staff were great, quite busy, nice atmosphere.Second time older couple, polite enough but not reallly interested! Cold plates, cold food and pretty bland. No atmosphere, none of the candles were lit, few customers, no music. Also don?t think there was any heating on. Wouldn?t go back, I?d rather walk into Dunkeld !!

A perfect venue to test your strength of character. From the server hollering "what do you want!?" as if I were a malevolent spectre discovered in the night, the threatening silent vacuum of charm, ambience and music, and the Fawlty Towers-esque caricature of an incompetent and begrudging manager (portrayed with brilliant authenticity by both husband and wife). At one point whilst still reading the menu hoping to turn over to the second page it was snatched from my grip and tucked under the arm of our prison officer who had cast us into the dark corner of the rafters. I asked if I could order a side and she glared at me coughing "you'll be lucky". As it transpired, I was not so lucky. What limited food I was permitted to order was tossed over to me like dirty laundry being discarded into the corner of a room, and by the time it landed beside me it had cooled to that rather unpleasant temperature you'd utilise to wash a small child's head.At another point as we were ordering drinks the gentleman in the blood red shirt matching his blood filled face glared at me thrusting his chin in my direction as if to cry, "if you don't order a drink right now I will crawl over this table and force a tumbler of milk into your neck". He then barked at a colleague of mine for daring to ask if they had anything other than "Beer".Having rushed and interrupted us throughout our order he began cackling at the notion that he may not have taken everyone's order down correctly and proceeded to stumble, bumble and mumble through a recital of six or seven incorrect beverages and grew angrier when we then had to repeat our orders to him. Perhaps it was our fault however for expecting refreshments from a venue with all the charm and welcome of an oubliette. After finishing most of our rations we sat in waiting, hoping our captors would take pity and collect our dishes and allow us to settle up and escape. No such mercy was granted, and so I approached the warden to beg our release. I could tell I was out of line as they huffed and scorned and slunk back towards the kitchen. I returned to my cell with the other prisoners and awaited a fierce reprimanding. We had one last trick up our sleeve however - Splitting the Bill. A concept so unfamiliar and baffling to this place that you'd have thought we'd resurrected the dead. The nice young gentleman who took our payment was kind however. After scorning our precise monetary calculations he told us upfront that we shouldn't pay any more than the bill amount as none of the servers get any tips, and anything over the due amount simply goes "to China". Fine with me, as had we tipped I was afraid the managers may have weaponised the shrapnel of our generosity and chased us down the Tay on hog-back.Free at last. We bade the staff a nice evening as they snorted and clambered back into their nest. Somewhere in the distance a raven cawed. The night was cool and I smiled to myself and thought, "I will never step foot in this terrible place ever again".

We booked several rooms as a large family group visiting relatives in Dunkeld. Mine was a twin room, spacious and clean. The hotel is traditional and welcoming. Everyone enjoyed their stay, the breakfast was very good. We had full Scottish and there was also lots of choice of cereals, juices and fruits. Special mention to Grant who served us both mornings with a great banter and a good sense of humour, well done ?duck? ?. Would definitely stay again .

We stayed 4 nights basically to attend a family wedding at nearby Cardney Steading, but also took time to explore the Dunkeld area. Our bedroom was on the top floor with a comfortable bed. Dinner on first night in Birnam Inn next door (under same ownership?) was very reasonably priced, but we ate out on other nights. Breakfasts were excellent in both choice and quality, though service was very slow on the one morning the manager was off-duty. Generally lives up to its aim to provide good Scottish hospitality. The broken glass in the front door (see reply to a previous review) was replaced during our stay. TIP: Book direct with the hotel, rather than through Booking.com or similar.

Charming and quiet old hotel in traditional style, basic rooms, but clean and well-presented. There's an attached pub next door that looked fine, and had a good dinner menu. The staff on the desk were pleasant and helpful, shame the ones in the breakfast room failed to bring what I ordered, and didn't really have attention to the detail of their customers' orders - but apart from that, the whole experience was more than adequate and the room was certainly good value. An ideal base for exploring beautiful Birnam and Dunkeld.
