This hotel cancelled a confirmed booking not just once but twiceWhy? Because they got a better deal from a government contract.Dirty tricks by email because the Manager did not have the integrity or balls to make the call to discuss despite my contact. Truly despicable and disgusting business behaviour.

Only stayed one night as a stop over for a further destination.PROS: Great location near town and train stationComfortable bedNice viewQuietNice buildingStaff friendly- but not overly helpful in telling us about the hotel and where to find things?ie restaurant, breakfast room, reading room (we only saw this was an option on our way out), bar, garden area.Cons: Very tired room, looks yellow stained from nicotine, no smell though.Wallpaper peeling off in places. No plug sockets near the bed.No hairdryerBreakfast was shocking?..was told at reception the night before there was only a comprehensive continental breakfast available? fine?.. what was available: white toast, brown toast, butter, marg, strawberry jam, honey, small cake, little packs of cereal, milk, tea, coffee, sugar, dregs of grapefruit, 8 slices of salami, baby bel cheese, cheddar cheese, oranges, yoghurt, fruit juice?..not very much choice or variety and not what I?d call comprehensive.

This hotel occupies an elegant old fashioned station hotel building. Staffing was light for the night I stayed there (2nd June 2021). A friendly and accommodative person at check-in apologised for the dining room being closed for the evening - not a problem because there are restaurants in the town.Booking.com promised a 'very good' breakfast for £10. Breakfast was the problem:I was told breakfast had to be ordered the night before by ticking boxes on a printed list. There was no full cooked or Scottish breakfast option so I went for sausage & bacon in a roll (white roll only), fruit (tinned), toast & marmalade and tea, within a fixed time offered by the hotel (either after 9.15 or before 8.30 a.m).In the dining room in the morning - I arrived at 9.20, 5 minutes after my allotted time - there was no-one present - I had to walk through a service area to the kitchen to find someone to say that I was there and waiting.Breakfast was brought quite quickly - sausage and bacon ok but the roll was basic and unappetising. Coffee was brought to the table, not the tea I had ordered on the form the night before. I pointed out the mistake and tea was brought, without smile or apology (even though I'm always polite). No offer was made to replace the half filled cup of coffee which I had poured thinking it was the tea that was ordered - so I took a clean cup from a neighbouring table when the staff person disappeared back to the kitchen.A few minutes later the staff person re-emerged from the kitchen and started noisily clearing up the other end of the dining room, a sign that the shift was coming to an end and couldn't end quickly enough. The lights were switched off leaving me in semi darkness,The toast never arrived at all and taking the hint from overall atmosphere I decided not to ask for it.On the way out I commented to the staff person that I didn't think it was good form to switch off the lights in the dining room while the guest was eating. The staff person said that it wasn't possible to switch off the lights in one half of the room without switching them off in the other half as well. The staff person said it was very hot weather - it was 17 degrees centigrade when I checked the thermometer in my car a few minutes later.I went to my room (16), packed my bag and left via the reception desk - where the unsmiling breakfast person was talking about the heat the receptionist. On the way down I noticed the stair carpet needed attention from a vacuum cleaner. The point here is not that this was a terrible experience - it wasn't. But the breakfast experience was disappointing, both the food and the slapdash service. Based on other hotel experiences in the Galloway peninsuIa felt I had stayed at a £55 per night hotel, not an £85 per night hotel.Hopefully nothing here that won't be fixed by some staff training. But that is needed now.

Potentially an awesome hotel, old building, friendly staff, decent breakfast. BUT feel ripped off as I was not informed of works going on in the hotel before I got there, no offer of reduction in price, and the bar was closed due to work, carpets were ripped up in the lobby for replacement, was awoken in the morning early with workmen banging and clattering. All way through breakfast banging. The room was very dated.

Superb hotel with lovely facilities, great food and excellent staff. A lot of attention had been paid to make the room and hotel that bit special. Highly recommend. Wish we could have stayed longer. Will definitely be back.

Two night stay, room was large, let down by poorly decorated bathroom, looked like painted by visually impaired "YTS" trainee with a 6" whitewash brush. Masking tape still on walls, large amount of paint on floor, (more than on wall?), painted rond pipes, over part of bath, inside of door frame missed. Warning sign, warning may take time for hot water!, was instantanious but boiling! Shower curtain ripped & hanging off. Complained, & were moved to another room (or would have been if they bothered to tell us!) when complained 2nd time they then told us we were to be moved to new room. Not told restaurant was closed. When brought to attention of manager at checkout they were quick to apologise & reduce bill, good location with parking.

A rather quirky hotel! Room was ok, bathroom had been refurbished but please , sort out the shower head, very poor. Looked like it could do with a lot more money spent on it. Chef is chef, front of house and painter & decorator ? Basic menu for dinner, of which we did not participate. Breakfast was serve yourself but cooked breakfast to order..passable. Housekeeping need to clean the stairs, see photo below?that?s shameful!

Beautiful old Victorian Hotel, showing its age a bit but that just adds to the charm for me. The staff where brilliant. Breakfast was excellent and the location is near the town centre. Our second stay and both stays have been spot on.
