I hadn't been to Tarmachan Cafe until a friend took me there for a birthday lunch treat. The warmth of the welcome and a glance at the specials board had me thinking, "I think this is my kind of place." The staff were knowledgeable and caring about my gluten sensitivity and enabled me to decide for myself which foods were suitable for me. The wonderful staff and the delicious food (I recommend the salad bowl and the home-made gluten free bread was the best I've tasted) meant that I left thinking, "This is DEFINITELY my kind of place." I can't wait to go back and try the soup and the gluten free cakes and cookies. First visit but definitely not the last.

Wonderful Cafe Near Balmoral castle. Especially for getting refreshing coffee before you back to the road! Version sausage roll is awesome and delicious. Highly recommended.

An amazing cafe with a limited menu but enough variety to cater to most appetites. Everything is freshly made. I always stop off here when I'm in the area. Never disappoints!

Really liked this place. Great location and interior is really well designed, not your typical highland place?very modern.
I had a long black, from Williams and Johnson coffee roasters which are well known to me. Very well made coffee and also great cinnamon bun.
Food looked good, wished I?d ordered something savoury after seeing it!

It might be odd in a review of a café to comment on screws. But sitting outside under their porch, I was able to take in the very stylish and robust cladding of the building, held in place by screws with star heads. Unusual but very neat. Just like the café itself. It oozes style - and a design ethic rare in Scotland, but common in countries like Belgium. The food was superlative. Just a simple pie - elevated to something special. And an amaretti biscuit that had a wonderful chewy base almost like coconut, and a lemony taste that lifted it to another level. The tea and coffee also exemplary, and the service friendly and efficient, given that the place was rammed.
We've driven past it before and always vowed to return. Well, now we have and it will not be our last visit. Scotland desperately needs more places of this quality and to find one opposite one of the biggest tourist attractions outside Edinburgh is miraculous. So avoid Braemar and Ballater - head to Balmoral instead.
Parking: Fills up quickly. Be prepared to park on the verge opposite. Don't drive on by, you'll regret it when you get to Braemar.

This is a busy well run gem of a place .. food/coffee scrummy.. the setting idyllic .. Tom&Catilin are earthy, realists..have made friends with their regulars.. what a place to bring up a family!

Fantastic café! ? Lovely, clean and spacious inside, nice atmosphere, and the food/drinks were top quality. Particularly loved the cheese toastie with chili jam, and the hot chocolate ? Would defo come back!

We visited the cafe on Saturday afternoon. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Given it was such a hot day, I asked if they were able to make iced coffees (as I hadn't seen them on the menu) and they were more than happy to make them. We both had cinnamon rolls which were AMAZING!!!, so light and fluffy. It was really nice to see a range of vegan available. Finally my partner ordered one of the highly recommended venison sausages to take home with him and said he would definitely go back for another one of those.We will definitely be back.
