I?ve stayed in many a hostel and bunkhouse, some good, some pretty awful, and I generally try to keep my expectations low - it?s just a place to bed down for the night, shower, and rustle up the odd meal. In saying that, the Sail Loft sets the bar pretty high. We had a very friendly welcome and tour of the building, which was only restored quite recently. Our room was spacious with comfortable beds and ample storage space and two lockers. The whole place is bright and airy, everything is spotlessly clean and well appointed. The kitchen is very well equipped. There are wheelchair accessible rooms, toilet and shower, which is great. The Sail Loft is also right by the sea and if you love laying in bed listening to the waves, you?re in for a treat. My only small annoyance was having to trudge downstairs to use the bathroom, which is a slight hardship for those of us with middle aged bladders, haha. I?d also like to mention the beautiful walled garden and surroundings. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Sail Loft, and loved the friendly vibe. We?ll definitely be back - highly recommended.

We booked the sail loft for a birthday / hogmany / family get together. The facilities were ideal giving us enough room to cook, eat and relax with the extended family. We also made full use of the accommodation unit, which we can?t recommend enough. Very clean, comfortable with the added benefit of being able to hear the waves from bed. Fantastic experience all round.

I spent a few days with my two young sons, we stayed in a family room and had a great time. The beds were so comfortable, the room so spacious and the location is beautiful- right next to the beach and so peaceful. We enjoyed meeting the other guests inthe fantastic kitchen, my kids' first experience of a hostel was a great one and thank you to the team and the community for all. We hope to return!

Spent two nights in this spotlessly clean and well equipped hostel whilst travelling the NE250 route. This was one of four different types of accommodation we stayed in and our favourite. We couldn?t believe our luck! After the warm welcome from Ian we enjoyed supper on the patio overlooking the sea in the sunshine and reading in front of the log fire when it poured! Coastal walks from the door and breakfast in the garden. All this and stunning views! We are already planning a return visit!

Everything about this trip was reassuringly wonderful; booking and having Ian answering my myriad of questions and his responses reassured me that this was going to be a good and safe, mum and son trip! Travelling from West Yorkshire up to Portsoy was worth the drive. Ian reassured me that he?d pop down to give us the keys to the wee flat, when we arrived, so we could make our 2pm tour over at Covesea lighthouse and he was true to his word. A quick tour and we quickly made beds and unpacked the car before we headed out. The SailLoft is immaculate. The communal areas are clean and extremely well catered for; kitchen is huge and has everything you could need plus there?s a big dining area too. Out the back of the kitchen is a decked area with tables should you want to eat outside . The lounge has a cosy fire and lots of comfy chairs. There?s an amazing launderette too ( not that we used it but we had a nosey!!) We had the flat and it?s was immaculate too. Small bathroom ( shower/loo/sink) and a small single bedroom. Great sized kitchen*/ dining/ lounge area - sofa folds out into a double bed. Beautiful sash windows - overlooking the front of the bay . *induction hob/ microwave/kettle/toaster and fridge. If you need an oven you can use the communal kitchen! We regularly used the drying room for our wetsuits & swim gear - open the windows to get a nice through draft ! A great wee room with a full length rail ; 2 wee rails in the window alcoves and hangers in there too ; storage heater and a sink ? long buckets to catch the drips were provided too! The whole area is just lovely - large gravel car park and well kept grassed frontage. The sea views are stunning and off to right ( as you look out to sea) I?d a great walk up the hill. At the rear is the burn, lovely to hear the water flowing and the neighbourhood cemetery means it?s quiet ! We had a look at the ?hot tub? and it?s in a quiet gardened area - looked interesting! The fire alarms work!! ? when we stayed we had to evacuate- everything was ok. It transpired that someone had put something on a storage heater ! BUT it?s good to know that the system works and Ian was on hand pretty sharpish to investigate and get us back inside ( reassuring) ?. We got to witness a beautiful sunrise so it was pretty good! Portsoy is a canny place; quiet and peaceful. A great base to head off to explore the area. We visited Covesea Lighthouse; Findhorn ; Cullen; Lossiemouth; Banff; Macduff ( great Aquarium there!) and Fraserburgh?& lots of stunning wee villages around. Highly recommend the SailLoft. We would have no hesitation in returning. All the staff are amazing and friendly and the accommodation is fabulous.

It is a comfy, warm, attractive and well-facilitated hostel in a brilliant coastal location. It is a couple of minutes walk to the beach and 5-10 minutes walk from the village centre. Irene couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful; the wood-burning stove had been lit in the lounge before we arrived. There is a garden area with seating and a hot-tub to the rear. It is a great place to use as a base for fort hanging out.
