Delightful venue with a beautiful riverside beer garden and well-appointed restaurant. Courteous and helpful staff. Popular with wall-walkers whether for quick refreshment or an overnight stay.

My husband and I stayed 4 nights in June. To us the accomodation, the food, and the location are what matter. The location is stunning and very relaxing; being able to sit out on, or walk along the riverside terrace, was really very pleasant. Apart from a rather grumpy greeting on our Sunday arrival, the staff were always friendly and very helpful. The room was spacious, a comfortable bed with good facilities and a good view at the back. The breakfast was very good. We were out and about for dinner 3 days but the dinner we had there was delicious - a superb lasagne and an excellent risotto. The way the dining area is set up is particularly good - breakfast is laid out in a separate service area and for any meal, there is good space and choice for where to sit and eat. An added bonus was the very good and convenient village shop up the road at Humshaugh, not far away. We would stay at the George Hotel again and indeed hope to do so presently

Excellent location for Hadrian's Wall. Rooms getting a bit tired. Very popular with people walking the wall. At times, such as breakfast, more staff would improve the experience.

Lovely location, but understaffed and spoilt by the rude bar person, who was very resistant to topping up beer or giving a taste before buying, and strangely antagonistic to dogs given they are welcomed in the rooms. Unfortunately also only had environmentally-wasteful plastic glasses...

Very good hotel great staff who go out of their way to help, food good. If you are walking the Wall, it's a great location. Only drops a star because, for the price, there are slightly better similar hotels along the Wall's route. The Sally at Itherington, for example. That said, this is, as I say, very good traditional hotel. Dog friendly.

Location is great for walking Hadrian's Wall, but paint peeling off walls, damp on windowsill, dirty bathroom, pool on pictures is closed, very uncomfortable bed and bad food. Would avoid if possible given the high price!

2.5 out of 5 rounded up.
We went out for dinner as a party of six, two children and four adults. The food itself was fine, relatively expensive for what it was but nice enough - nothing to write home about. The location is great with lovely views of the Tyne. What really let the experience down was our waiter, from when we first got there and were given our table he was rude. No friendly greeting, no smiles or any real polite behaviour, slapped our stack of menus down in front of one person without any effort and served all drinks to one corner of the table without saying a word. Never wrote down our children's dessert orders so nothing arrived, we decided to leave it and go. We had two other waiters at times who were both lovely, but unfortunately if you work within customer service you really need to at least pretend to be friendly, it's deflating to spend so much on a meal to be treated like you aren't welcome there - it would put us off returning.

Our family stayed in two rooms for two night while trekking Hadrian?s wall. The location is fantastic; on the banks of the North Tyne, an easy walk to Chesters Roman Fort and delightful Humshaugh village. Unfortunately, the hotel was chronically understaffed and the rooms were in poor condition. Both rooms smelled of dogs and required maintenance. Can?t recommend.

Stayed at this hotel during a 10 day walk on Hadrians Wall, this was without a doubt the worst accomodation. The owner should spend a night in Room 306, maintenance was last performed when Emperor Hadrian built the wall in AD122. Door handles were hanging by a thread, the boiler heater was permanently on in the bathroom with no adjustment possible mid summer. The owner of this property obviously has short arms and long pockets. The redeeming feature was the no doubt the long suffering staff who were great.

Horrible value for money... I bet this used to be a nice hotel but nowadays it seems to be a dilapidated mess for such a high price tag. Only positive aspect is the location and the extremely friendly and corteuous receptionist. I read several comments concerning the delayed breakfast due to the breakdown of the chef's car... This was also the case during our stay. Several guests complained about the noise coming from a wedding party which was taking place outside the hotel...

Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Rooms were clean, comfortable bed. Great location to stay overnight on our Hadrian's Wall walk. Lovely grounds overlooking the North Tyne. Sadly the food was not good which let the hotel down.

Used this hotel to stay one night as was up here for work and had a good sized car park to park the van in. The staff are friendly and hotel itself seems quite big. Rooms are ok, clean but could do with a freshen up. Good size garden, leisure part was closed for refurb. Food was good and reasonably priced. We had the George burger which was lovely, although the waitress did say it's huge and good luck with it to everyone who ordered it. Dunno what you guys think is a huge burger up north, but down south that's nothing. Lol, it was good though!

I stayed here one night while walking on the wall. After reading some of the reviews, I was expecting a lot worse. I had a double room which was quite spacious with a lovely view of the river. The bathrooms have recently been renovated with nicely sized rain showers. The bed was also very comfortable but rooms can be a bit loud, which isn?t ideal for light sleepers. While it was disappointing not to have the pool facilities open, I still found the grounds quite lovely and the service was top notch. I want to give a special shoutout to Sakewell, who went above and beyond to make everyone?s stay exceptional. When the coffee machine needs a break in the morning, he comes and gets you when it?s ready again. He was also upfront about the Sunday roast taking a bit more time, which I found refreshing as some servers wouldn?t be as upfront. I watched him run around providing friendly and individualized service to many guests and overheard many compliments in his name. Give this man a raise! The roast was delicious and the breakfast had a good variety. The packed lunch is very reasonably priced as well. I would stay here again as for the price, I believe it?s worth it. However, I do believe the hotel should let guests know in advance that the facilities are not in operation.
