I am a fan of the Whittling House generally - we have stayed and eaten there and it?s always been good. Today we had Sunday lunch there and three out of four of us ate from the normal menu rather than the Sunday lunch menu. My son, whose birthday it was, ordered seafood fettuccine for a main and this was really nasty - the sauce had a horrible aftertaste - three of us tasted it and agreed. We informed the waitress when she collected the plates and she came back and said the chef apologised but this still appeared on the bill at 22 pounds - the overall bill was over 220. I?m pretty amazed that a virtually uneaten main went back to the kitchen and they kept it on the bill. The waitress did say my son should have said earlier but he didn?t want to make a fuss but nevertheless I was a bit shocked and we left feeling that we had not had very good service about it. Shame.

Booked a last minute mid week meal at the whittling house. The food and service were beyond expectation. Couldn't recommend them for an evening meal highly enough. If we are visiting the area again we will stay in one of the rooms.

Visited on Thurs 7th March. Such a lovely place. Wonderful staff- so professional, warm, thoughtful people. The inside was beautiful with a lovely, charming friendly atmosphere. The decor is superb. Had the fish and chip lunch. Oh my goodness - absolutely fab. Many thanks to all...Rob NicholsonFood & drinks: Food and drinks arrived promptly. We had fish and chips. Not just any fish and chips. These were the chippiest of chips and the fishiest of fish - ever! Absolutely wonderful!

The lunch they serve is outstanding! We stopped in Alnmouth for a walk about the beach and town and discover WH was serving lunch. I ordered the stew pot of the day. Irish Lamb stew with local artisan sourdough bread. Excellent ! Flavorful rich and full of veggies and perfectly cooked lamb. I finished up with an excellent warmed chocolate brownie (served with both thick double cream and ice cream). Don't pass this place up for a meal!My 2nd meal here I ordered a "Ox Pie with Sweet Potato fries". EXCELLANT!The vegan burger and their beef burger should not be passed upFood & drinks: Excellent burgers (both vegan and beef)

We had wanted to visit the Whittling House for some time based on recommendations from friends. Visited with another couple and both of us had dogs with us. Welcome was extremely friendly and check in was super easy. Rooms were very comfortable with great bed / bedding / shower. If I could make a recommendation the lamp on the desk in front of the TV was huge and really unnecessary. We ate dinner on the first night and service was a little hit and miss but the waiters were lovely. Breakfast is fantastic and very good quality. On night two we asked to move the booking to 7:30pm and we were told the restaurant was full and could only fit us in at 7pm. When we went down we were given a table right by the door and it was very drafty. Asked the lovely waitress if we could move and there was a bit of back and forth and finally we were moved. The table we were given was much better with two dogs...and there were two empty tables next to us that nobody came to sit at. So how could it be full and we couldn't move to 7:30pm?We would love to visit again but there would have to be one change that could be so easy. This is a dog friendly hotel and as everyone knows the Northumbrian Coastal path is a big destination for walking. There were no facilities to wash walking boots / dogs at the back door and this meant our dogs were absolutely filthy in our rooms. I really couldn't see how this made sense a hotel that has spent a lot of money on a beautiful interior. I really would consider how you could put a small facility at the back of the hotel to help dog owners clean off their dogs and also clean off our walking shoes. Even somewhere that people could leave their dirty walking shoes to keep them off the carpet.Rooms: Very comfortable. Great bedding and bed. Some of the features are a little cumbersome like the wardrobes and tea/coffee facilities.Food & drinks: Great breakfast - wonderful choice and very tasty. Would say evening menu is a little pricey for seafood.

We loved it. Very relaxed with excellent food and lovely staff. We had one of the suites which gave us a great place to chill after visiting the wonderful places and coastline in the area. This was our first time at The Whittling House and hopefully won't be the last.

We loved our stay at the Whittling House. All three nights spent here were amazing. I cannot thank the staff enough for everything they did to make our stay as best as possible. The hotel is a short walk away from the beach. And about a 20 minute walk from the train station. I definitely would recommend this place to parents travelling with a small child. The menu was so good we ate most of our meals here. Will definitely be back.

Food & drinks: Really nice, with a gentle woodsmoke flavour to the game terrine, normally I don't like smoked meat but this was an exception. The other dishes were equally as tasty, shame there was no space for dessert.

If you're in the area, it definitely has to be a place to go to, but it's even worth a dedicated ride out to this place as it's a real treat. The building itself is a lovely place but the highlight is the food. I was part of a group of 13, all the adults loved their food. Highlights were the venison pie(a real pie with the full allocation of pastry) and pork belly. My choice was the monkfish tail and prawn curry, absolutely spot on. A couple of good beers on tap to boot topped it all off. Not a cheap place some might say, but value for money was excellent with this kind of quality food and service.

Lovely place to stay...we were meant yo be there for two nights but one of our fur babies was poorly, so we decided to leave early. Thank you for being soooo dog friendly.....lovely dog bed and little welcome pack for them!Lovely room, only negative was no proper seating in the room. I realise its an old building, so I guess they have to work with what the space they have. But the bed and bed linen were sumptuous. The bathroom was gorgeous, wish I'd had the chance to use that amazing shower!!We had dinner, which was gorgeous, thank you and hopefully we will see you in the future.Rooms: As above

We visited for lunch with our dog and enjoyed excellent coffee, Fish and Chips and Welsh Rarebit. The winter offer of just 10 pounds for Fish and Chips is superb value and my husband declared them the best in Northumberland. The huge portion of Rarebit was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of eating in a beautiful building during out of season Alnmouth.
