We enjoyed the whole experience! Food - friendly service - history overview of Alnwick - and the sun came out! Perfect! Thanks Laurie for the experience! Well done.

Had a great overnight stay at The Plough, lovely food and staff, who were also very accommodating of our requests to hold our suitcases after check out while we explored the nearby gardens.

The food was okay but the service was horrendous. I'm not one to leave a poor review but in this instance I think it's justified. I don't blame the lads that were working, but having two people to run the full food service clearly isn't enough. Orders were placed at the bar then it took a hour for starters to arrive then an hour later mains came (after chasing). If you want anything that resembles acceptable service then don't visit.

Food deals don't exist despite being widely advertised inside and out. Inexperienced staff, trying but lack of organisation and professionalism.

Ate here at the weekend service was chaotic and slow waited 45 mis for our meals & when they came ordered fish & chips with mushy peas given garden peas & fish was crispy on top while soggy underneath , chips cold & tough , not a pleasant experience for what we paid , would not recommend at all or return

I just moved to the area and popped in for a drink a few days ago. I was so impressed by how friendly the staff were that I had to bring my family back tonight! The steak and ale pie was absolutely delicious, and Lily and Keiron?two of the young staff members?were incredibly helpful and kind. They made our visit special and were such a credit to the team. They even treated our dog, Stan, with water, a burger, and some treats. What a fantastic experience!

My first visit here. Clean barman was welcoming. Service fairly slow. I bought an afternoon special £12.00 for a meal and drink. I ordered Fish and chips with a large (pint) soft drink. Presentation of food left a lot to be desired. Fish child size and small'ish portion of chips. I had my fish lightly battered. Fish was bland even adding lemon to it, didn't improve the taste. I would return for a drink, but maybe not food.

Enjoyed our stay, but kichen closed due to staff absent. New staff on bar still training very slow service, not sure of products but very apologetic, couldn't be helped, felt sorry for the manager who was clearly under pressure.

Listed here this evening for the first time whilst on holiday. Laurie was brilliant at ensuring my child, who has sever allergies, was able to eat safely. There are very few places that accommodate people with allergies. We enjoyed both a Sunday roast dinner and other items from the menu. The meal was absolutely delicious. Any issues were addressed straight away and we felt very looked after. If we come again to Alnwick we will definitely visit again.

Chaotic start due to inexperienced staff.
We eventually had a good night but it took awhile to get things sorted.
Staff were very nice but very inexperienced.

This is my VERY WORST hotel experience ever. I was staying 2 nights 5th and 6th August 2025. On arriving I wasn't massively impressed by my welcome but I was staying just 2 nights - however my stay got worse with time. I was paying £125 per night.
My room was a twin room and shabby. Mismatched furniture with damaged surfaces. Just one bedside table and lamp. Water stain on the shower room ceiling and the light not working over the basin therefore difficulty to apply makeup. Poor water flow to the shower. A toilet with macerator that appeared to be continuously going throughout the night. Very dirty windows and frames. A wardrobe that was stuffed full with a spare bed making it impossible to hang clothes.
The first night was OK but going down to breakfast I found that the breakfast was not included in the price of £125 despite it saying so on booking.com. The staff member I spoke to was very dismissive about this fact saying 'she'd emailed them so what more can she do'. In addition, the chef was ill that morning so breakfast wasn't available inhouse anyway.
I asked her to arrange for the light in the shower room to be fixed which she agreed to do then I left for the day.
On returning that evening at around 6.00pm I found that the bar/restaurant were locked up and in darkness and I had to access by the back fire escape. The place was totally shut down and any room guests were left to their own devises. The fire escape/security door was not functioning correctly - on closer inspection I discovered a screw had been screwed into the door flame to stop it closing. As a woman travelling alone it was alarming to discover that the only thing separating me from the outside world was my bedroom door!
No surprise therefore that my bathroom light had not been fixed nor had the teas and coffees been replenished. I did call the hotel number a number of times for assistance but it was just ringing out. What would I have done if I had lost my key and/or really needed assistance???
I complained bitterly to the same member of staff the following morning stating that I would never have booked a hotel that was unmanned through the night and listed the above issues. Under sufferance she gave a refund.
I have no objection to paying £125 per night but expect value for money. The Plough in Alnwick should not be in business with their current level of staff and service.

Can't tell you too much so i've tried to be neutral. We were totally ignored when we entered. I stood at the bar for an age! A guy was there but he totally ignored me! So after what seemed like an age we walked out and got super service at The Fleece!

Really nice food for a really reasonable price. Well presented fresh quality. Staff behind the bar also really friendly, quick service. Decor was also 10/10, will be returning when back in alnwick.
