Absolute hidden gem in Northampton. The only home Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed in England. The Art Deco walls, lighting, furniture, rooms simply amaze you. As a Glaswegian I know his work well, buildings and art so I was fascinated to discover Derngate. Volunteers give a wonderful informative tour. You must book. Then you can wander afterwards at your leisure. Upstairs is the museum about the owner and drawings of the house plans etc The cafe is reasonable too, tasty home baking, aft teas and breakfasts. Parking is nearby alongside the park. If I remember the house is part of National Trust. All in all a fabulous day out!!

78 Derngate is a true gem in the heart of Northampton. A beautiful building, inside and out, it's well worth a visit if you are interested in architecture, history, or of course Mackintosh's work. The building was beautifully restored last year and now also features a lovely garden. The staff and volunteers at the museum are friendly and welcoming, and the gift shop and tea room are the (literal) icing on the cake!

Amazing, I've wanted to come here for years as I've known about Macintosh since I was in the furniture trade from a teenager . Obviously a lot of the original furniture and fittings are copied from the originals as the house has had several lives from the original design by macintosh, but so extremely well done it is hard to tell unless you are an expert in this field .When you purchase your ticket it is also valid for a year which is a bonus if you wanted to take other friends or family back .I would certainly reccomend this visit as it really is like going back in time to the Arts and Crafts Era

A very interesting tour by a guide who obviously loved the place and knew a lot of information. She was lively and well prepared. 78 Derngate is a wonderful representation of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his ability to design a complete interior that was stylis, modern & functioned as a place for people to live. If you are interested in architecture and interior design, visiting this house is a must.

We had a guide take us around it was included in the price. She was very pleasant, knowledgeable and clear. She certainly added value. Without the guide you may wonder if it delivers value. The ticket enables entry for a year we will go back for a second trip in a few months time maybe without the guide the second time. There's a cafe which we didn't have time to use but we will next time. The Northampton museum is only 5 minutes walk away so between the two it was a good afternoon out.

Its a Time Capsule. A trip back in time to 1917 leading edge domestic architecture and decor purchased by the wealthy. Rennie Mackintosh designed the building and stunning decor (with a good deal of customer input/preference). Interesting to note 'what is missing' when compared to current domesticity. There are narrow stairs. A lift is available for the less able (not used). There is a small Gift Shop and a pleasant resturant both with reasonable prices. We were made most welcome, given an outline before setting off into the buiding.I'd recommend 2 hours for the tour. It cost us £8 each (2023).I thought it was good, my wife said it was fantastically interesting (Gold Star for me. Whoop!).If you want to see more Rennie Mackintosh inspirational design you will need to go to Glasgow.Hope you find it as interesting as we did.

If you are a fan of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, or pre-Art Nouveau design, you need to come and take a look at this house. Beautiful restoration of a terraced town house and garden, with many original features. The guest bedroom will blow your mind! If this is your kind of thing, I strongly recommend a couple of hours here. Staff are great and knowledgeable

I was a bit underwhelmed. Wish the house all the best, but there's not alot of Mackintosh there. Atrium is a bit glitzy too. But a nice visit.

When I found out Charles Rennie Mackintosh had designed the interior of a house in England, I made it my mission to visit. What a fantastic find. A grade 2 listed Georgian house with stunning Mackintosh interior/architecture. £9 for an adult ticket, which included a guided tour...this took about an hour. A special thanks to Elaine, who showed us around and gave a detailed insight into the history of the property and its occupants. The Dining Room restaurant and a gift shop on site. Photography allowed. If you're in the area, this delightful historic property is well worth a visit.

A gem of a place in Northampton. Having pre-booked tickets we were greeted warmly and after an explanation of how to navigate the house we set off. There were laminated sheets in each room but we enjoyed listening to the audio guide. As fans of Charles Rennie Mackintosh we were keen to explore and were not disappointed. The continued investment in 78 The Derngate will only serve to encourage repeat visits.

We visited the house on Saturday afternoon and it was so interesting, very glad we went to see it. Our guide was amazing and had so much knowledge to share with us. We then went and had afternoon tea which was absolutely fabulous. Lots of savouries which we thoroughly enjoyed, and then came the cakes...delicious.Would recommend you go to both places and see this amazing hidden gem in Northampton.

This is the single most interesting site in Northampton and beyond. Such a small space and yet a universe of artistic genius and fantasy.
