I irregularly visit the York store, more often for coffee and occasionally to browse the 'offers'.
In my opinion, there has been a slow but noticeable degradation in the quality of service, food availability, and cleanliness of the café area over that last two years.
For a supermarket, boasting a vast array of cakes and pastries for sale, it is hard to comprehend how its café so regularly runs out of food. On Saturday 4th January, there were no teacakes, the oven was broken, and the eating area was filthy. Tables were left uncleared, and even those that were, were covering in grime and stains. Might it be time for another food hygiene inspection perhaps. Don't get me started on the floor area, which doesn't appear to have been cleaned properly for months.
To cap it off, I can report that the female door lock was unworkable, and the tap was broken.
I'd be intrigued to know which 'manager' was responsible for overseeing both the café and washroom areas, which senior 'leaders' are overseeing quality control, and why so few Waitrose staff now appear to care about what customers think.

Still fabulous, the best shopping experience, the best deals, and great value if you shop savvy. Its ethical standards are great too, so you get a warm fuzzy feeling that you are making a difference when you shop there.

A decent range and staff are always friendly. Not very spacious when the white hair brigade or upmarket students swarm in. Cafe is nice.

Love this supermarket, but the café is one of the worst of all the chains. You'll genuinely have a nicer experience at Tesco.
No hot food due to staff issues (which lasted months now), the Christmas special coffee was one of the worst things I've tasted this year and the pastries are stale.
I was expecting so much more from Waitrose! We'll not be going to this café again.
