Fab pub in a charming village . Lovely room , attentive friendly staff. We loved it. It was a long overdue break and was just perfect. The food was fantastic.

We've just returned from a wonderful night away at the Fairfax Arms, and we're already planning our next visit! We booked it fairly last minute and thought it looked nice, but it exceeded our expectations at every step. The pub itself is stunning and looks really impressive on the approach. The interior has been sympathetically modernised whilst retaining a lot of original features. The room was clean and comfortable and far bigger than appears on the pictures. There were lots of mod cons and thoughtful touches throughout the room, and we both slept like babies on the king size bed!Whilst we didn't eat in the evening as we'd already booked elsewhere, based on how nice the specials looked and how good the breakfast was, we'll definitely be eating here next time. The whole stay was underpinned by the friendly and attentive staff who were helpful and approachable.Walkability: Beautiful little village, with a pleasant stroll around the village or a longer one into the Howardian Hills and to Ampleforth Abbey

Visited restaurant for lunch (Saturday). Smart restaurant, good food, pleasant service, reasonable price, quiet village location, good spot to sit outside for food or just a drink, in summer.Nearby activities: A couple of hundred yards down the road at the side of the Fairfax Arms is a large miniature railway site, worth having a nosy at in case trains are running. It is open to the public for rides etc on a couple of Sundays a month, see websitehttps://rsme.org.uk/about/for details. There are also some good woodland walks (Yearsley Woods) down the same lane but I haven?t visited them lately, so can?t confirm access etc.

Just visited for lunch - what a find, lovely decor, friendly service & superb food. I had a burger which was delicious, plentiful & meaty! My husband had a steak, very well cooked. We shall certainly be back. The location is also very impressive.Walkability: Worth a wonder around the village after a visit.Noteworthy details: Lovely smelling body lotion provided in the public toilets

Lovely restaurant and good food. Very friendly and helpful staff. The bathroom was very small and the shower was in need of update. Very comfy bed but no mirror in the room.

Recently stayed at the fairfax Arms we had booked a delux bedroom. The room was far from deluxe the reasons why are, badly cracked floor tiles in the bathroom. The room needs a total repaint . Frayed light shade. Wall mirror totally in the wrong place you could only see your waistline , far too low.Needed to reset the tv as there was no TV channels available . ( not a thing I should be doing on a vacation) The room was also on the small side .And finally the room was above the kitchen, so noisy most of the night . Including throwing the empty bottles into the bin next to the room ( extremely annoying) . So I would describe the room as a basic standard room. Parking is limited but road side is also available. The main area of the pub was light on Christmas decorations inside and out (Dissapointing ). The food was average nothing special although presented well . Service was okOn paying my bill for the stay there was no mention how my stay had been . I feel the place does need a lick of paint and more attention to customer service . Dissapointing stay .

Just popped in on our way home. Friendly service and probably the best chunky chips outside of home cooked

We go to the Fairfax Arms ones every 2/3 month's as it a nice drive from homeAnd there's a number of way's there and backAnd each time we stop off we have a spot of lunch so over the years we had a goodly number so I can say the food is always well prepared and of good qualityThey have been times when I or my wife have not seen anything on the menu that we fancy but that's not a there fault just personal choiceWe will keep going as we know we'll always get good food at a fair rate

Comfortable rooms, great staff, good food, free parking.Off the main roads, but then it's quiet. And it's also a lovely Inn, with charming decorations, even in unusual places.Rooms: Decent size TV, comfortable even when freezing outside, available space good everywhere (except by the towel rail).Bathtub could sit lowerFood & drinks: Good food, with some unusual (but tasty) dishes, breakfast has more options than the basic continental and English. No need to eat out unless looking for something very specific

Stayed the night in the Fairfax Arms and the room was great with nice little touches. Service was great throughout the stay and food was excellent.

Food, service and ambience are lovely but the standard of guest rooms is not of the same level. Room 4 is small, and the en suite is poor, shower cubicle is miniscule and you need to be a contortionist to open and close the window! No double glazing and the room door is so poorly fitting you can hear everything in the hall way.The food is of a high quality and plenty of it. Staff are lovely and friendly. The decor and furniture of the pub and dining room is superb. Just need to do the same for the rooms.
