Arrived without an appointment for a new battery fitting. Was told there may be a wait as they had other jobs, but even so this was only 15 minutes. Then the friendly assistant said he could do it straight away as there was some confusion over the early job in the queue. Went for a quick walk around the nearby shops and by the time we got back it was all done. No fuss, no problems, no delays, just enthusiasm to do the job with a smile. What more could you ask for? His colleague was just as helpful, when we went back to pay.

Be careful about trusting Halfords car battery testing?
They tested my battery and told me that it needed to be changed. I paid for a new battery plus fitting charge. The new battery then ran flat within a few days.
I took the car to another garage where they said the fault was with the car battery charging system. They fixed this by replacing the alternator and put the original battery back in the car which has been fine since.
The Halfords battery test only established if the battery was charged or not? It did not establish why (ie. whether due to a faulty battery or faulty charging system).
The most disappointing part is that when I tried to return the battery, I as told that it couldn?t be returned as it was flat and not in a resaleable condition. They did give me a customer services number, and a case has been raised? Not sure where this will end, but regardless, I could really do without the hassle!
The bottom line is that Halfords told me that my battery needed to be changed when it didn?t due to their flawed testing. To my mind, that means it was mis-sold and whether the battery is in a resaleable condition or not is irrelevant.
I?ve given one star because the guy in the store I spoke to was friendly, pleasant and polite (despite my expressed frustration)? I just don?t think he understood the point I was making.
UPDATE (21/8/25): Conclusion was that the original battery was ok and Halfords did refund the cost.
I should say that the guys in the store did actually deal with me pretty well (especially as I probably wasn?t one of their easiest customers!). My view though is still that the test they do is limited... Whilst it does establish if the battery has a low charge, it doesn?t do anything to identify if due to faulty charging (the alternator) rather than the battery itself.
As batteries fail more regularly than alternators, concluding that the battery needs to be changed is probably correct more often than not. Also, if the charging system does become faulty and the battery runs at low charge for some time, I believe this can damage the battery so I guess this also increases the odds of the bad battery conclusion being correct. My experience though does show that this isn?t always the case.
It?s a shame, because I understand checking the charging system is very easy? it?s the same test they currently do but with the engine running and then checking for an increased voltage. The issue I understand is that Halfords retail will only test with the engine off due to increased risks of working over a running engine (as they employ young people with limited technical training etc).
The best solution is probably to go to a garage? trouble with that is you usually have to wait till they can book you in which might be a problem if your car isn?t running. For me, I?m going to get myself a multimeter so I can do it myself in future? with a bit of help from ChatGPT! If I do need a battery, I won?t hesitate to buy from Halfords? I just won?t be relying on their testing.

Just been to Halfords in foss islands, york.
I needed a bulb fitted. As I arrived I was a bit confused as what to do. A friendly female staff member told me where to park and what to do.
Lovely guy on the till. And lovely guy Matt, fitted the bulb quickly and efficiently. The whole process was seamless and staff incredibly friendly - I will definitely return and recommend!

PLEASE DO NOT USE! Complaints departnet are hard to get hold of, so complaining on here! Over priced and communication is not their priority! Dropped my car in for service and tyres at 8.15am, I always pick my keys up from the halfords store next door and had requested this, guy wrote it down at front desk. Gets a call at 11.40am, spoke to a guy who advised additional work and cost, I said no. No mention of final bill or any additional charges to be paid. Went to pick up my keys from the shop after 6pm, not there. Shop explained they were too different companies and didnt have access to the garage, apparently I owed money and my car was being held for ransom! Changed all my plans to grab my car the next day, charged for something I wasnt informed of, advised they called me several times but that's a lie as they didnt, got an email at 2 minutes to 5pm to state I could go grab my car. Im not happy! Screwed up my MOT last year and should have learned from that mistake. Left with empty apologises and additional charges! I really won't be using Halfords Foss Islands again!
Update-still no refund from my mobile fitting from 24th July! Complaints department on the phone, asking for details and not telling me why even though ive provided 3 personal details-postcode, car reg and name. Credit card company are investigating now. Shambles.
