If you have 4 legs, bark and wag your tail then you get the full attention of the barmaid. If you are a punter who wants to buy a beer then you have no chance. Unfortunately the 'lady' has more interest in dogs than serving customers. Come in woof woof have a dog treat, I had a rottweiler blah blah blah oh you want me to serve you a beer sorry wait a minute I'm doing something extremely important on my laptop. Avoid this place, do yourself a favour and go to the bar on the trainstation it's cheaper better beer and you won't have to listen to the pathetic woman blah blah blah about dogs

A great first or last stop before / after the train. A good selection of York beer and wine.

Not sure how Brew York took a pub that had very little atmosphere, and somehow made it worse.
Considering this was taken over by BY nearly a year or so ago they have done incredibly little to make it their own.
Even so much as branding seems to have been forgotten bar some bunting outside. A real shame considering how good the tap room is in York plus the pedigree of the beer they brew

Sun 19th Jan. . double room . . guest BOOTH
Stayed for one night with my partner. Nice place, friendly staff and good location. I saw it was next to the railway station and thought nothing more as I expected the hotel to have noise reduction glassing but it did not, just the original wooden vertical sash windows that let all the outside noise in
After an evening of food & drink n the town we returned to the hotel. I set my alarm for 10am ahead of the check out at 11am
At 6,30am I was awoken by what sounded like someone pouring water loudly into an empty metal bucket. I looked out of the window and it was dry outside. I then noticed the sound was coming from the radiator in the room. It sounded like the inside of the radiator had collapsed and water was gushing internally or maybe just a lack of maintenance and there was lots of air in the system.
And then the trains start running
So I have stayed at numerous hotels before and what I would call the honest brands make you aware on the website if the room may suffer traffic noise etc . . .no such indication or mention with the Mitre Inn
Maybe worth requesting a room on the side of the hotel away from the train station

Had both a gluten free lager and a gluten free pilsner on tap. With a gluten free pale ale can in the fridge.

We just had a drink in this pub, nice quiet atmosphere friendly staff, a little bit out of the centre of Knaresborough but within walking distance.

Didn't stay at the hotel, just drinks - but loved it so much that we (deliberately!) missed two trains so we could stay longer. A great range of beers - welcoming, knowledgeable bar staff - friendly locals. Food looked awesome. We will be back!

I was delighted when Brew York took over The Mitre earlier this year. It was my "local" in the mid to late 2010s, always with a friendly buzz and loyal regulars - but in recent years it had lost its way, and most of us became regulars elsewhere. In its first few weeks of re-opening, the buzz returned, the pub was busier than it had been in years, and my hopes were high. So, why the 3-star review? After all, the beer is gorgeous, the pub is well kept... and yet that early buzz hasn't been maintained, numbers are down, and most of its trade seems to be coming from visitors, not from locals. That might have worked OK over the summer months, but in order to get through the winter, I think a shift of focus is required (in this regard, the forthcoming changes to the kitchen sound very promising).
And here we get to the nub of the problem: no matter how good the beer is, the "hospitality" is almost non-existent. I'm not saying that the staff are rude, but there's no friendly greeting at the bar, beers are served in almost total silence, and the bar staff come across as entirely indifferent. (And just for the record, this is a commonly held view around the town; I've had a lot of conversations about it.) This just won't work in a town like Knaresborough, where friendliness and good conversation are the norm. If The Mitre wants to build up a solid base of regular customers, it MUST engage with them, make them feel welcome, and make far more of an effort to create the sort of good-natured vibe that you'll find in so many other Knaresborough pubs. I still want it to succeed, but I don't think it will succeed until heart and soul are injected into the very bones of the place.
