Food excellent, staff excellent. Location excellent right opposite the cathedral. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.Rooms: Lifts available.Room adequate for our needs as we had a shower room.Nearby activities: Cathedral opposite, shops , castle , cafes , castle all near bySafety: Felt very safe , friendly tourists, good cafes.Walkability: Good on pavement, but not so good on cobbled Street if disabled like me. Plenty of places to sit down , but I had my walker so I could sit down as many times as needed.

We dropped off some surprise 80th stuff ahead of the Afternoon Tea tomorrow. The receptionist was very good. Terry.

Location is great, however don't select this hotel based on their photos of the rooms. The hotel is really long overdue an internal revamp (being kind), it is dated and very, very tired. We booked two rooms, the bathrooms were absolutely not in a good enough condition for the room prices charged and not even good enough for a basic, budget hostel, and certainly cleaned in a hurry. The television controller is so old the buttons are worn and even had a Telex option. Shame, but look elsewhere.

Got to say this is the first time I have left a negative review for anything - its that bad! If you read the other reviews - its tired, dated - I suspect last decorated in 1978. Its the first hotel I have stayed at when you pay on arrival - that's so they can refuse you your money back once you see the rooms! The rooms are tired, it felt as if you could feel every spring in the mattress, the paint on the bath was worn and chipped, the wall units have been repainted from brown to black - again worn and chipped. The corridor smelt, the receptionist when we left couldn't care less. All in all save the money and go to the Premier Inn, in town, cheaper, just round the corner, CLEAN, and comfortable. Give this a miss, its diabolical

On the surface it seems an okay hotel, but on closer inspection it's really unclean. My bedroom was the filthiest I've ever stayed in - it seems picky, but it was clear the carpet hadn't been hoovered in ages and it just generally really felt and smelt unclean in the room and in the corridors. It's a shame and the staff were very friendly and it's a great location, but I definitely won't stay again.

I stayed here for a wedding. My accessible room was well equipped with a wet room with shower seat, grab rails and a pull chord. It was a surprisingly large room and the bed was extremely comfortable. The tea and coffee tray had a huge choice and snacks. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All the food was very high quality and locally sourced. Breakfast had everything you could want whether cooked or continental. The evening menu was exquisite and everything was delicious. For the price I paid I?m over the moon.

This hotel is tired. The bedroom was not particularly clean, and the bed sagged dreadfully. The furniture in the bedroom was very knocked about, and could?ve done with a wipe with a damp cloth! The kettle in the room was absolutely filthy, and I washed it myself prior to use. The room was very hot, so we opened the windows only to be greeted with the endless noise of the wedding going on downstairs in the hotel. The music was still thumping after midnight, and the wedding guests were still making a lot of noise at 4 am. I was disgusted at breakfast, as I ordered poached eggs from the kitchen, and they came out on a dirty plate! I?ve never been so horrified in my life.

We thought we would ?upgrade? slightly from the holiday inn express, that we normally stay in but things were going downhill after our evening check in. We had to walk through a very long corridor that smelt very strongly like urine. Then we walked past a huge curled up (dead) spider which did not move for days and stayed in the very same spot on the stairs. When we arrived in the room I just felt uncomfortable. It wasn?t just dated, it all looked grubby, lots of things were damaged, the bathtub looked absolutely disgusting. There was also some unidentifiable funky gunk dried onto the please don?t disturb sign and the carpet had multiple black stains. The window in the room was open and full of condensation, which hadn?t changed when we woke up the next morning. After breakfast I decided I had to ask them to do something about it. The staff were friendly but unfortunately they did not seem overly surprised when I requested a room change. The manager did not even look at the things that I listed as reasons for requesting another room, he must be used to this by now. I guess they did what they could to improve things for us and moved us to another room, which was ever so slightly better than the first one. The level of cleanliness of the second room was still bad though and the level of damage in the room was just as bad as in the first one. The heatable towel rails in the bathroom look like a fire waiting to happen! It?s like the cleaning staff are unaware that you can close doors to clean behind them and don?t even get me started on the extractor fans! I also found a pair of glasses from one of the previous guests just at the side of the bedside table on the floor which I am surprised were not picked up on when putting new sheets on the bed. Breakfast was OK, but the coffee machine looked really dirty the first couple of mornings so I did not have a coffee. Day three seemed like a big improvement- coffee machine had had a clean, and there was actually signs out to tell you that the plates were hot (after inadvertently burning my fingers the first morning, I already knew that by then). Also the service was much better, used plates were actually being cleared from the tables and staff were more aware of what was going on. All in all I would recommend to anyone to chose somewhere else if you are looking for an enjoyable stay.

I want to be nice! But sadly I can?t This was our third visit in about 3 years but this time it was not good Hotel is looking VERY tired Reception on check in were quite discourteous- arrived at 1:45 and check in was from 2 pm but firmly told you should come back in 15 minutes Corridors are all patch worked and mismatched carpets rippling up and a trip hazard Bedroom had lots of obvious stains on carpets , ripped wallpaper etc At breakfast one of the the waitresses was lovely doing a meet and greet but the other not so good - a huge hole in her tights and simply ignored everyone she just cleared the empty tables and refused to interact with guests Food hmm undercooked bacon and sausage - asked for the eggs Benedict which had dubious coloured ham and had boiled egg Sadly won?t be returning I?d recommend trying elsewhere One good point - fantastic view of cathedral

My son and I took my mum for an afternoon tea treat for her birthday. It was the most amazing afternoon tea any of us had ever experienced. The portion sizes were very generous. Everything was freshly home made. My son doesn?t drink coffee or tea but that wasn?t a problem. He was allowed to choose a soft drink of his choice. We had a lovely window seat which gave us views of our wonderful Cathedral. The staff were all friendly and welcoming but particular praise goes to Nigella who made sure everything was perfect for our visit.

Extremely disappointed, we chose this hotel from a list which was part of our wedding present, chosen because of the way they described the room ect. We had a deluxe or superior room so I was expecting something half decent, Room was tiny and very dated mould on ceiling thin curtains so the sun was shining straight through window early morning, you could here all the traffic outside like you had the window wide open window looked like they hadn't been cleaned for years, only good point was clean fresh bedding and a fairy decent breakfast. Very disappointed especially when this was a wedding gift

Comfortable beds. Good location with good view of the Cathedral. Hotel and rooms a bit tired. Lots of choice at breakfast but staff very slow in replenishing the buffet, probably due to too few staff who were running round working hard. I am Gluten Free and was pleased that GF sausages were cooked to order on request and GF toast supplied.

Pros: Lovely breakfast and great views of cathedral from bar and restaurant areas. Cons: We were in room 240 @ £176 bed and breakfast. The hotel makes great play on its website as being ?beautifully restored? with rooms that are ?decorated with modern designs and all come with lavish en-suite bathrooms?. Really???! How on earth you think that sentence can even come close to describing what we were given I just don?t know. Mould on the ceiling in bathroom, paint flaking off the ceiling, damaged bath side, cobwebs, ancient shower rail, cistern top broken in half, horrendous brown carpet, curtains just as bad, and to cap it all a totally grim outlook. The corridors look like something out of The Shining and the lift certainly gives the impression that if you get in, you may never make it out. And all this against an unrelenting backdrop of BROWN everywhere - utterly depressing. Not worth half what we were charged unfortunately.
